Gaza School Drone Strike 10 Killed Including Children - Report

The tragic events unfolded in Gaza as the Al-Nazla school in Saftawawy, located on the outskirts of Jabaliya, served as a haven for individuals fleeing the escalating violence. CNN reported that at least 10 people, including children, met their untimely demise on Sunday due to a drone strike targeting the very sanctuary they sought refuge in.

Saleh Al-Aswad, an eyewitness from Jabaliya, recounted to CNN the harrowing experience of his son-in-law, currently undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the attack. He shared the heart-wrenching loss of a father who, while innocently baking bread for his children, tragically lost his life alongside his daughter, Afnan, and his son, Mohamed.

This devastating strike comes amid escalating concerns raised by United Nations agencies regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a dire warning, emphasizing the crippled state of Gaza's healthcare system amidst shrinking access to essential facilities and supplies.

The OCHA report, citing information from the World Health Organization (WHO), revealed that as of Friday, a staggering 15 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza were only partially operational, while 21 were completely out of service. This left only six functional field hospitals to cater to the overwhelming medical needs of the population. The strain on the remaining facilities was immense, with hospitals operating at over four times their bed capacity, as noted by the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Fuel shortages, along with dwindling medical supplies and equipment, further exacerbated the precarious situation, jeopardizing the ability of healthcare facilities to deliver critical services. In a desperate plea, Suhaib al-Homs, director of the Kuwait hospital in Rafah, shared a video message urging the WHO to intervene urgently to ensure the hospital's continued operation by providing essential fuel supplies.

The alarming health crisis unfolding in Gaza has reached dire proportions, with displaced individuals in central Gaza surviving on a mere 3 percent of the minimum standard for daily water needs. Communicable diseases, particularly affecting children under the age of five, such as diarrhea and suspected Hepatitis A, continue to proliferate unabated.

In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis, the WHO called upon Israel to ease all restrictions on aid entering Gaza. The primary route for vital medical aid from Egypt had been severed amidst Israel's ongoing military operations in Rafah, exacerbating the plight of the besieged population.

In a significant development, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a landmark order, directing Israel to cease its military operations in Rafah and withdraw from the enclave. The court emphasized the "immense risk" posed to the Palestinian population and urged immediate action to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.

Despite the court's rulings, which are legally binding, there remains a critical gap in enforcement mechanisms. Nonetheless, the gravity of the situation cannot be overstated, as emphasized by Judge Nawaf Salam, president of the ICJ, who characterized the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "disastrous" and in urgent need of intervention.
