Gaza Official Reports Discovery of Nearly 200 Bodies at Hospital Since Saturday

Amid ongoing conflict, Gaza's Civil Defence agency disclosed on Monday that approximately 200 bodies had been uncovered over the past three days at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. These bodies are believed to be of individuals killed and buried by Israeli forces.

Mahmud Bassal, the spokesman for Gaza's Civil Defence, informed AFP that recovery efforts are still underway within Nasser Medical Complex. Since Saturday, nearly 200 bodies of individuals, deemed martyrs, have been retrieved. Several of these bodies were found in a state of decomposition, posing challenges to the identification process. Despite these difficulties, civil defence teams continue their diligent efforts.

On Sunday, Bassal revealed to AFP that some of the recovered bodies exhibited signs of torture. Ismail Al Thawabta, head of the Hamas government media office in Gaza, stated a higher count, reporting 283 bodies discovered at the hospital. He emphasized the need for an international investigation into these alleged crimes against civilians, including women and children.

Muhammad Al Mughayyir, a senior official at the civil defence agency, confirmed the discovery of corpses at the facility and indicated that efforts to retrieve remaining bodies would persist until Thursday.

The area surrounding Nasser hospital has been a focal point of intense fighting, with Israeli forces encircling it since March 26. Hospitals in Gaza have been targeted in the Israeli offensive against Hamas, which controls the territory. Israel alleges Hamas of utilizing hospitals as command centers and for holding hostages, allegations that Hamas denies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on April 6 that Al Shifa, Gaza's largest hospital, had been severely damaged by Israeli attacks, leaving it in ruins and containing many bodies. WHO personnel described distressing scenes of partially buried bodies and the overpowering odor of decomposition.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, Israel continues its military offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza, resulting in significant casualties. The health ministry in Gaza has reported the death of at least 34,151 individuals, primarily women and children, due to Israel's retaliatory measures.
