Gaza City Under Siege: Trapped Bodies as Mediators Seek Truce

Residents of Gaza City faced dire conditions on Thursday as Israeli forces intensified their assault, complicating peace efforts mediated by the US and Egypt in Qatar.

Hamas militants warned that the escalated Israeli attacks on Gaza City could derail ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the long-standing conflict.

Gaza City, previously home to over a quarter of Gaza's population, has been heavily damaged in past conflicts. Despite efforts to rebuild, many residents have been forced to evacuate again under Israeli military orders.

The Gaza health ministry reported people trapped and casualties in Tel Al Hawa and Sabra districts, where rescuers struggled to reach due to ongoing hostilities.

The Civil Emergency Service estimated at least 30 fatalities in Tel Al-Hawa and Rimal areas, unable to retrieve bodies from the streets amid the violence.

Despite Israeli instructions for Gaza City residents to use designated routes to the south, many refused, expressing defiance with hashtags like "We are not leaving" on social media.

"We are prepared to die here rather than leave to the south. We've endured months of hardship and bombardment, and we're ready to face whatever comes," said Mohammad Ali, 30, in a text message. His family, like many others, faces shortages of essential supplies.

"The occupation is bombing Gaza City as if the war just started again. We hope for a ceasefire soon, but ultimately it's in God's hands."

In Rafah, near the Egyptian border, ongoing clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, continued. Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed four, including a child, in Tel Al-Sultan.

Israeli military sources confirmed intercepting rockets fired from Rafah earlier in the day.

Negotiations mediated by Egypt and Qatar have seen Hamas making concessions, including agreeing to a ceasefire and the release of some hostages without a prior Israeli commitment to end the conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing opposition within his cabinet, insists on a deal that allows Israel to continue operations until all objectives are met.

Hamas officials declined immediate comment on the ongoing talks, underscoring the sensitivity and complexity of the negotiations.

"The mediators will meet today with Hamas to discuss the responses received from the Israeli side," said a Palestinian official close to the mediation efforts, without providing further details.

This updated version encapsulates the recent developments and tensions in Gaza City amidst intensified Israeli military actions and ongoing peace negotiations.
