Survivors Speak Out: French Women Recall WWII Rapes by US Soldiers In the wake of the Normandy battle victory in October 1944, US military authorities initiated trials against 152 soldiers accused of raping French women. One such survivor, Aimee Dupre, broke decades of silence to share her mother's ordeal after two American soldiers assaulted her in August 1944.
Living in Montours, Brittany, 19-year-old Aimee witnessed the arrival of US soldiers with initial joy, like many others in her village. However, her family's peace shattered when two drunken soldiers demanded a woman on the evening of August 10. Aimee's mother, Aimee Helaudais Honore, bravely agreed to protect her daughter, enduring a harrowing ordeal of repeated assaults.

Dupre, now 99, shared her mother's handwritten account of the traumatic night, revealing the sacrifices made to shield her from harm. Their experience was not isolated; in October 1944, 152 soldiers faced trials for similar crimes after the Normandy victory.
Historian Mary Louise Roberts shed light on the systemic issue, attributing it partly to the army's promises of easily accessible women to boost soldiers' morale. The sexual violence aimed to assert dominance over France and its men, serving as a tool of conquest.
Accounts from survivors like Jeanne Pengam in Plabennec painted a grim picture of atrocities, with her sister raped and father killed by a GI. Despite witnessing the brutality, survivors often remained silent, grappling with shame and fear amidst the celebratory atmosphere of liberation.
Louis Guilloux's novel "OK Joe!" and subsequent trials of GIs, predominantly African American, underscored the racial bias in justice. Roberts highlighted the military's scapegoating of black soldiers, with racial stereotypes facilitating their disproportionate punishment.
The legacy of silence endured, perpetuating myths of the "good war" and preserving the reputation of American troops. Roberts faced backlash for challenging this narrative, reflecting society's reluctance to confront uncomfortable truths about wartime atrocities.
The US Department of Defense declined to comment on the matter, leaving survivors to grapple with the enduring trauma of wartime sexual violence.
