France Summons Russian Ambassador Amid Aid Worker Killings in Ukraine

The French government called for talks with Russia's ambassador on Monday following the killing of two French NGO workers in Ukraine. The victims lost their lives in Russian airstrikes near the war front north of the Dnipro River, in Beryslav, Kherson region. Three other French nationals were wounded in the same incident.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack as "cowardly and outrageous" and plans to visit Kyiv in the coming weeks. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed condolences but claimed the specific details of the incident were unknown. She also accused France of contributing to the conflict by supplying weapons and training to Kyiv.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal pledged to increase arms shipments to Ukraine, emphasizing the right of Ukrainians to defend themselves. He discussed this commitment during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, where Scholz called for more European countries to support Ukraine with weapons.

Macron previously announced plans to deliver more long-range cruise missiles and bombs to Ukraine, though French military aid has been criticized for lagging behind some other allies. Scholz asserted that Putin hopes for a weakening European resolve but emphasized ongoing support for Ukraine from the U.S. and Europe.

The French Foreign Ministry, in summoning Russian Ambassador Alexey Meshkov, aims to denounce the resurgence of disinformation targeting France. The French government has accused Russia of an online manipulation campaign, including impersonating leading French media and the Foreign Ministry to spread confusion and false information about the conflict in Ukraine.
