France qualified for the 2026 World Cup after a strong 4-0 win over Ukraine in Paris. But the feeling around the match was not one of big celebrations. The match took place on the 10th anniversary of the November 13, 2015 terror attacks in Paris, where many people lost their lives. Because of this emotional day, both the players and the coach kept their celebrations very quiet. Even though the win was big, the evening meant much more than just football.
Kylian Mbappe, the captain of France, played an important role in the match. He scored two goals, including a penalty, which helped France control the game early. However, after the match, Mbappe spoke mainly about the importance of remembering the victims of the attacks. He said he was proud that France qualified, but the commemoration was the most important part of the night. His words made it clear that football was secondary to the memories of that tragic day.
France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, also shared his thoughts after the match. He said the win and qualification were expected because France is a top football nation. Deschamps explained that the performance was solid and professional, even if it was not very exciting. He said the team did what they needed to do to qualify. The coach also said that the first half was difficult because Ukraine played very defensively, creating a “low block,” which made it hard for France to attack.
During the match, France had most of the possession. They kept the ball for long periods and tried to find openings in Ukraine’s tight defensive wall. Mbappe created chances early in the game but was stopped twice before finally scoring the opening penalty. Ukraine stayed deep and tried to stop France from getting close to the goal. It took patience, strong passing, and constant pressure before France started scoring more easily.
After Mbappe’s penalty, the match became easier for France. Michael Olise scored the second goal with a well-taken finish. Later in the match, Mbappe scored again, showing his strong form. Young player Hugo Ekitike added the fourth goal to complete the 4-0 victory. The goals came at good moments and helped France stay calm and confident throughout the game. All four goals came from fast, clean attacks after France learned how to open up Ukraine’s defense.
Deschamps said the team played slowly in the first half. He explained that France did not pass quickly and sometimes lacked movement. In the second half, the coach made changes that brought more energy. Maghnes Akliouche and Hugo Ekitike made a positive difference after coming on. Their speed and confidence helped France attack more directly. Deschamps said these substitutes brought “freshness and impact” at the right time.
Even though the 4-0 win was impressive and France secured their place in the 2026 World Cup, the atmosphere remained quiet and respectful. Deschamps said that because of the emotional meaning of the date, it was not a night for loud celebrations. Instead, it was a night to do their job, qualify for the World Cup, and honor the memories of the people affected by the 2015 attacks. The coach also said that France is expected to qualify for every major tournament, so the team stayed focused and humble.
The match against Ukraine was important for France both emotionally and professionally. They qualified for the next World Cup, continued their strong football record, and honored an important day in their country’s history. The players showed respect, maturity, and responsibility. Although the score was large, the meaning of the night was much larger. France will now look ahead to the 2026 World Cup under Deschamps, who will lead them for the last time at a major tournament.
