The groundbreaking Dutch couturier Iris van Herpen is renowned for her avant-garde designs, attracting a star-studded clientele that includes Lady Gaga, Tilda Swinton, and Jennifer Lopez. Utilizing unconventional materials such as borosilicate glass, mylar film, polyurethane, glass organza, polyamide powder, and thermo-plaster polymers, Van Herpen crafts otherworldly, sculptural masterpieces.

While not a household name, Van Herpen has earned recognition from cultural trailblazers. Collaborating with musicians like Bjork and fashioning a custom gown for Beyoncé's "Renaissance" world tour, she's become a sought-after designer. Grimes donned a laser-cut Van Herpen gown at the Met Gala, showcasing the couturier's futuristic inspirations, and other celebrities, including Winnie Harlow, Teyana Taylor, and Dove Cameron, wore her creations to the "Gilded Age" Met Gala.

Over 100 pieces from Iris van Herpen's repertoire are now on display at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in a retrospective titled "Sculpting the Senses." The exhibition delves into her diverse influences, ranging from dance and art to science, architecture, nature, and philosophy. Van Herpen's designs draw inspiration from rock formations, fossils, and skeletons, reflecting her deep connection to the natural world.

Water, the human skeleton, and the broader natural realm serve as recurring motifs in Van Herpen's work. Growing up near the Waal River in the Netherlands, surrounded by water, she considers it "nature's mirror" and interprets its colors and textures through innovative techniques. The human skeleton, a key motif, is explored through anatomical drawings and museum fossils, creating timeless and evocative designs.

Beginning her career as an intern at Alexander McQueen, Van Herpen launched her eponymous label in 2007. Known for pushing the boundaries of traditional couture, she introduced the first-ever 3D-printed dress at Amsterdam Fashion Week in 2010, and a skeletal 3D-printed dress for Haute Couture Week in Paris in 2011, earning her a spot on Time magazine's list of the best inventions of 2011.

Van Herpen's unique approach blends contemporary technology with traditional craftsmanship, ushering haute couture into the future. Dubbed "craftolution" by the designer, this evolution of craftsmanship defines her ability to merge historic skills with modern technology.

Eschewing fashion trends, Iris van Herpen's designs remain instantly recognizable, characterized by their delicate yet strong aesthetic. Renowned photographer Molly S.J. Lowe, a collaborator with the couture house, praises Van Herpen's ability to bring together dichotomies, creating dresses that are not only beautiful but also push the boundaries of fashion.

In essence, Iris van Herpen stands at the forefront of the fashion world, where her innovative and provocative designs continue to captivate and inspire. The retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs pays homage to her transformative journey, showcasing the multifaceted layers of life that influence her unparalleled creations.
