Footballer Breaks World Record with Skills That Aided His Fight Against Suicide

Caleb Wu, a 22-year-old soccer player from Hartford, Connecticut, has recently gained widespread attention for setting a world record in an extraordinary feat that is deeply personal to him. According to Guinness World Records, Wu achieved the record for the most alternating football (soccer) touches with his feet on a treadmill in just 30 seconds, scoring an impressive 75 touches. This accomplishment not only highlights his remarkable skills but also serves as a testament to his journey of overcoming severe depression.

Caleb’s story is one of resilience and transformation. For years, he battled significant mental health challenges that nearly cost him his life. His struggle with depression was a heavy burden, but it was through soccer that he found a sense of purpose and strength. The sport, with its demanding skills and rhythmic juggling, provided him with solace during his darkest moments. Football became more than just a game for Wu; it was a lifeline.

In a candid conversation with Guinness World Records, Wu shared the motivation behind his record attempt. “I always had a passion for soccer and did a lot of juggling tricks and soccer/football freestyle,” he explained. The challenge to break the record came from his teammates, who had shown him a video of someone attempting and failing to achieve the same feat. “I wanted to prove them wrong—it was a fun challenge,” Wu added.

This record attempt was not just about setting a new mark; it was about self-affirmation. Wu reflected on his past struggles, revealing, “When I was younger, I almost took my life. I wanted to make the most of my abilities and prove to myself that I can do awesome things.” His determination was not only for himself but also aimed at inspiring others. “I wanted to show them that they're capable of overcoming obstacles,” he emphasized.

In addition to his mental health challenges, Wu faced racism during his formative years. He recounted experiences where classmates would subject him to hurtful stereotypes, suggesting that Asians were only good at math. These experiences fueled his desire to excel in sports. “I wanted to show them I could compete as an athlete,” he said. Despite the adversity he faced, Wu played college soccer for four years and even served as team captain for a year.

Caleb Wu’s journey is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. His world record is not just a celebration of athletic skill; it represents his triumph over personal demons and a commitment to using his platform to inspire others. Through soccer, Wu has found a way to channel his struggles into something positive, proving that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to achieve greatness.
