Five Russian Climbers Die After Fall on World’s Seventh-Highest Peak

Five Russian mountaineers have tragically lost their lives after apparently slipping and falling on Mount Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh-highest peak, according to an expedition organizer in Nepal. The climbers were attempting to scale the 8,167-meter (26,788-foot) mountain during Nepal’s autumn climbing season.

The group had been reported missing since Sunday, and a rescue helicopter was deployed to locate them. On Tuesday, the helicopter successfully spotted their bodies on the mountainside, as confirmed by Pemba Jangbu Sherpa of I AM Trekking and Expeditions, a Kathmandu-based organization overseeing the expedition.

The expedition faced challenges in planning for the recovery of the bodies, which would require significant manpower, equipment, and careful coordination due to the hazardous conditions on the mountain.

Among the five climbers, two had reached the summit of Dhaulagiri, while the remaining three had turned back before achieving the peak. Communication was lost between the climbers and the team members at the base camp, raising concerns for their safety.

The autumn climbing season in Nepal, which began last month, tends to attract fewer climbers compared to the more popular spring season. The lower number of climbers during this period, along with reduced permit fees, makes it an attractive option for some. However, the risks remain high in these challenging environments, underscoring the dangers faced by mountaineers.
