Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that five global and local consortiums, along with one leading company, have reached the final stage of the 4th Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2025. The competition focuses on the theme "Dubai Autonomous Transport Zone," challenging participants to design a model district that seamlessly integrates various modes of transport within a single area. This innovative district aims to provide residents with flexible transport options tailored to their needs while ensuring excellent service quality. The initiative seeks to set a global example for cities in adopting self-driving transport.

The winners of the competition will be revealed during the Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport, scheduled to take place next September at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The finalists were selected by a panel of global judges chaired by Dr. Steven Shladover, a renowned expert in self-driving transport technologies. The shortlisted participants include the WeRide/Deutsche Bahn consortium representing the UAE, Germany, and China; the BrightDrive/eVersum/Shiptec/SeaBubbles consortium from Switzerland, France, the UAE, and Austria; the Orcauboat/PIXMOVING/Heriot-Watt University Dubai consortium representing the UAE and China; the SURAA/Arti consortium from Austria; and the leading company Zelos from Singapore.

In the next stage, these participants will conduct field tests in their respective countries based on approved guidelines and procedures. The final results will be announced at the Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport in September.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted that the Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has become a groundbreaking global platform. It has grown into an essential event that brings together leading experts, policymakers, researchers, and academics in the field of self-driving transport. The event serves as an opportunity to exchange ideas, showcase global best practices, and explore the latest advancements in autonomous technologies through discussions, seminars, and workshops.

Al Tayer also emphasized the impressive participation in the fourth edition of the challenge, noting that submissions exceeded the expected number by 170%. He added that the challenge aims to expand the adoption of self-driving transport while addressing significant issues such as first and last-mile connectivity, traffic congestion, and the underutilization of public transport systems. He reaffirmed that self-driving transport remains a cornerstone of the RTA’s strategy and that Dubai is committed to launching more innovative initiatives to make this vision a reality.

Al Tayer further noted that the challenge has strengthened Dubai’s position as a global leader in autonomous transport. It has enhanced the city’s reputation for innovation, forward-thinking design, and opportunities for collaboration between the public and private sectors. This effort aligns with Dubai’s D33 Agenda, which seeks to double the size of the city’s economy and position it among the world’s leading economic hubs in the coming years.

Participants in the challenge were assessed based on specific criteria, including technical expertise, commercial viability, and the ability to deliver innovative and integrated transport solutions. The results of this competition will play a key role in shaping the future of autonomous transport, reinforcing Dubai’s vision for smart cities and sustainable mobility.
