Sara Sharif, a 10-year-old British-Pakistani girl, was tragically found dead in her bed on August 10, 2023, in Woking, southwest of London. Her body showed signs of extreme physical abuse, including broken bones, burns, and bite marks. Her death raised alarming concerns, and the investigation revealed disturbing details about her treatment.
Her father, Urfan Sharif, aged 42, fled to Pakistan the day before his daughter’s body was discovered, accompanied by his wife, Beinash Batool, 30, and the girl's uncle, Faisal Malik, 29. Shortly after arriving in Islamabad, Urfan Sharif made a call to the UK police, admitting that he had "beat her up too much." However, during the trial, Urfan claimed that these statements were fabricated to protect his family, denying any responsibility for his daughter’s death.
A month later, all three adults returned to the UK and were arrested. They face charges of murder and allowing the death of a child, but they continue to deny the allegations. The case was presented at London's Old Bailey, where details about Sara’s injuries and the alleged abuse she suffered were revealed. According to testimony from Beinash Batool, Urfan Sharif had frequently beaten his daughter, something which he admitted to but denied causing Sara’s burns and bite marks.

While Urfan admitted to slapping his daughter multiple times, he denied any involvement in burning or biting her, stating that he was often not at home when the injuries occurred. He also denied using a cricket bat to discipline Sara, a claim that had been presented during the trial.
The court heard shocking accounts of Sara being mistreated, including being tied up with brown packaging tape. Urfan Sharif broke down during questioning about this incident and placed the blame on Beinash Batool, calling her “evil” and “psycho.” He accused her of biting Sara "like an animal" and insisted that he was unaware of the injuries she had sustained. He also pointed out that Sara wore long sleeves, long bottoms, and a hijab, which he claimed hid the extent of her injuries.
Further forensic evidence presented in court included packaging tape and a plastic bag that had been fashioned into a hood. The bag was found to have Sara's DNA and long brown hairs, as well as fingerprints matching Urfan Sharif’s. While Urfan denied any involvement with the bag, he suggested that his fingerprints were there due to handling the items while sorting the trash.
In the lead-up to Sara’s death, Urfan Sharif’s lawyer, Naeem Mian, noted that Urfan was often absent from home due to work, leaving Beinash Batool to manage the household. He described his wife as “manipulative” and mentioned a time when he came home to find Sara's hands bound with tape, accusing Beinash Batool of this act. Despite this, Urfan did not call the authorities and continued to believe his wife’s apology, later admitting that he had been "an idiot" for not acting sooner.
Text messages between Beinash Batool and her sister in 2022 were also revealed in court, showing that Batool had planned to cover up Sara’s bruises with makeup after an alleged beating by Urfan. The messages referred to Sara’s injuries with disturbing indifference.
The case has left the public in shock as details of the abuse and the circumstances surrounding Sara’s death continue to unfold. The trial is ongoing, with the jury considering all the evidence presented by both sides.
