Family Survives Plane Crash Using Parachute to Slow Descent

In a miraculous escape, a couple along with their two-year-old daughter survived a plane crash after deploying a parachute to slow the small aircraft's fall. The incident occurred over a mountainous area, as reported by the New York Post. Following the crash, authorities found the family near the wreckage site in Whitehorn, California, on Friday. Remarkably, despite the terrifying ordeal, the 38-year-old husband and wife, along with their daughter, emerged with only minor scratches, according to police statements.

The ill-fated flight, a 2004 Cirrus SR22, had taken off from Shelter Cove airport and was en route to Santa Rosa, where the family resides, as confirmed by law enforcement. However, mid-flight, the aircraft experienced power loss, initiating its descent.

As recounted by a spokesperson from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, the pilot attempted to troubleshoot the engine failure but realized the altitude was too low for recovery. Consequently, the decision was made to deploy the plane's parachute system in a desperate bid to slow its descent.

Describing the parachute as massive, the sheriff's office noted that it managed to carry the aircraft until it ultimately crashed into a forested area.

Captain Quincy Cromer from the sheriff's office shared insights with a local outlet, characterizing the parachute deployment as a "last-ditch effort" to ensure survival. He emphasized the slim chances of survival without the parachute.

Remarkably, all family members had exited the aircraft by the time emergency crews arrived at the scene. The local fire department, which responded to the incident, also shared photos depicting the parachute entangled in a tree near the wreckage of the plane, illustrating the magnitude of the crash and the effectiveness of the life-saving parachute deployment.
