The Supreme Court on Thursday deliberated on multiple petitions calling for a re-test or cancellation of the 2024 NEET-UG exam, marred by allegations of leaked question papers and erroneous 'grace marks'. The session featured intense arguments, including scrutiny of an IIT Madras report affirming normal score distribution. Post-lunch, focus shifted to the security protocols during question paper transportation, a pivotal issue in the alleged leaks.

Senior advocate Narender Hooda, representing the petitioners, highlighted concerns over the custody chain, alleging papers were dispatched via private courier on April 24. Issues arose after CBI hinted at a potential leak either during transit or upon arrival at a Hazaribagh school, where papers were found on an e-rickshaw under open skies and received by the arrested Principal.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing NTA, refuted claims of a leak, emphasizing rigorous security measures from printing to distribution, including GPS tracking and a seven-layer security system. When questioned about the use of private couriers, Mehta deferred his response.
Earlier, the court indicated it would consider a re-test only if the exam's 'sanctity' was significantly compromised by the leaked questions, echoing previous concerns. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stressed the need to demonstrate systematic impact across the entire exam to justify cancellation, citing logistical challenges in segregating implicated students from the vast pool.
The debate also centered on the disparity in petitioner numbers—131 seeking a re-test among 1.08 lakh selected candidates versus 254 opposing. Hooda argued the difficulty of establishing variances in such a large dataset of nearly 24 lakh candidates.
NTA's assertion, backed by IIT Madras data, highlighted normal mark distribution typical of large-scale exams, countering claims of abnormality.
