Former French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has been given preliminary charges related to allegations of witness tampering in a case involving her husband, former President Nicolas Sarkozy. The charges stem from accusations that Sarkozy received millions in illegal campaign funds from the regime of then-Libyan President Moammar Gadhafi.
The judicial action against Bruni-Sarkozy, a former supermodel, was initiated on Tuesday. She has been placed under judicial supervision, which restricts her from contacting anyone involved in the case except for her husband. These restrictions were detailed by a judicial official who requested anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Bruni-Sarkozy faces charges of witness tampering and participating in a criminal association with the intent to commit fraud. These charges are related to efforts to allegedly pressure Ziad Takieddine, a key witness who claims that Sarkozy received illicit campaign contributions from Gadhafi's regime. The goal was to deceive magistrates investigating the former president's 2007 election campaign financing.

Her legal team has not commented on the latest charges. However, following her questioning by police in May, her lawyers stated that she provided "useful clarifications and explanations" without further elaboration.
Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as France's president from 2007 to 2012, has been embroiled in multiple legal battles. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Earlier this year, an appeals court in Paris upheld a conviction against Sarkozy for illegal campaign financing in his failed 2012 re-election bid. He was sentenced to a year in prison, with six months suspended. His lawyers have appealed this decision to the Court of Cassation, France's highest court. Under French law, he remains free pending the outcome of this appeal.
Additionally, Sarkozy was found guilty in 2021 of corruption and influence peddling, making him the first former French president in modern history to be convicted and sentenced to prison for actions during his presidency. He retired from active politics in 2017.
The ongoing investigations and legal troubles have further complicated Sarkozy's legacy, highlighting the serious allegations of corruption and illegal financing that have marred his post-presidential career. The current charges against Carla Bruni-Sarkozy add another layer of complexity to this high-profile case, drawing significant attention from both national and international observers.
