European Union countries involved in peacekeeping operations in Lebanon have no intention of withdrawing their troops from the southern region, despite calls from Israel for such a move. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg confirmed this stance during an interview, highlighting a recent discussion among EU foreign ministers.
Since October 1, when Israel initiated a ground operation against Hezbollah militants, peacekeeping positions in Lebanon have faced escalating violence. Reports indicate that two Israeli tanks breached the gates of one of the peacekeeping bases, resulting in injuries to five peacekeepers. This surge in conflict has raised alarms across European governments, particularly those with troops stationed in the region.

In response to the ongoing violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the withdrawal of the peacekeeping force from areas considered strongholds of Hezbollah. However, Schallenberg made it clear that European nations are committed to maintaining their presence. "There was no debate about pulling back or whatever," he stated, emphasizing that the safety of troops is of utmost importance and must be ensured by all parties involved.
Austria contributes approximately 160 soldiers to the peacekeeping force, which consists of around 10,000 personnel, with 3,600 troops coming from various EU nations. Schallenberg acknowledged Israel's right to defend itself against threats from Hezbollah but stressed that even unintentional attacks on peacekeeping positions violate international law. He expressed concern over the necessity for Israel to exercise caution in its military operations, particularly in areas where peacekeepers are stationed.
Looking ahead, EU contributors are scheduled to hold a video conference to discuss their current military posture and the future role of the mission, which includes considerations regarding troop levels, equipment, and rules of engagement. The situation remains delicate, with increasing tensions and the potential for further escalations in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
