Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has condemned the recent Israeli airstrike on Jabalia, a refugee camp in Gaza, which resulted in a significant number of civilian casualties. The airstrike, part of the ongoing military operations in Gaza, has raised international concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict.

In his statement, Borrell expressed deep concern over the mounting civilian toll, describing the situation in northern Gaza as increasingly alarming. He highlighted the growing use of the term "ethnic cleansing" to characterize the ongoing events, emphasizing the forced displacement of civilians as a violation of international law. This widespread displacement, Borrell noted, is creating a dire humanitarian crisis.

The EU official also condemned Israel’s use of hunger as a weapon of war, particularly the blockade on essential goods, which he stated is a direct violation of international humanitarian law. He pointed to United Nations warnings about the risk of famine spreading in northern Gaza, a region already facing severe shortages of food, medicine, and water.

Borrell's statement also underscored the responsibility of Israel as an occupying power to allow the safe passage of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The EU High Representative called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law and ensure that essential aid reaches the civilian population.

He further urged the international community, including Israel's key allies, to take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. In particular, Borrell called for the swift release of hostages, who have been held by various factions in Gaza since the conflict erupted.

In addition to his remarks, Borrell referenced the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which has called for immediate action to address the humanitarian situation. The ICRC warned that any delay in intervention would result in further loss of life and suffering. The organization stressed the urgency of providing aid within days, not weeks, to prevent a worsening of the crisis.

The EU's condemnation of the airstrike on Jabalia is part of a broader diplomatic push to address the escalating humanitarian situation in Gaza, with Borrell reiterating the EU’s commitment to supporting efforts for peace and stability in the region. The EU has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and urged both sides to return to negotiations.
