Emirates, recognized as the world's largest international airline, is enhancing its operations across Africa by introducing additional flights to key destinations, including Entebbe, Uganda; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Johannesburg, South Africa. This expansion aims to meet the increasing demand for travel within the continent and improve connectivity.
Since its inaugural flight to Africa in 1986, when Cairo was its first destination, Emirates has steadily expanded its network, now serving 20 passenger and cargo gateways across the continent. This growth significantly contributes to the development of Africa's air transport market and enhances connectivity within the region.
Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, stated, “Africa has long been a priority region for Emirates. We will deepen our strategic focus on expansion and continued investment on the continent, as an important anchor for our future network." He highlighted that the new flight frequencies to Uganda, South Africa, and Ethiopia will support regional growth and establish critical links via Dubai, which serves as a vital gateway to emerging economies in Asia and the Middle East.
Since October 27, Emirates has increased its operations between Dubai and Uganda, upgrading from five weekly flights to a daily service. Operated by a Boeing 777-300ER, this additional flight adds 718 seats weekly between Dubai and Entebbe. The enhanced schedule connects travelers to popular onward destinations from Dubai, including Canada, the U.S., India, and the UK. Notably, Emirates remains the only airline offering First Class service in and out of Entebbe, allowing passengers to enjoy luxurious amenities and a premium travel experience.

This expansion reflects Emirates’ two-decade commitment to Uganda, which is emerging as a vibrant tourism destination. At the 2024 Arabian Travel Market, Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding with the Uganda Tourism Board to promote the country’s diverse natural and cultural attractions, further supported by the additional flight frequencies.
Looking ahead, Emirates will also increase its flight frequency to Ethiopia, with a daily connection between Dubai and Addis Ababa starting January 1, 2025. This move aims to accommodate the rising number of visitors to Ethiopia, which aspires to become one of Africa's top five tourist destinations by 2025. By increasing its flight offerings, Emirates will enhance accessibility for travelers, particularly from the Middle East and Far East.
Moreover, the airline plans to introduce a fourth daily flight to Johannesburg, set to begin on March 1, 2025. This will restore operations to pre-pandemic levels, resulting in 49 weekly flights to South Africa, which is one of Emirates' most popular destinations in Africa. Once all additional frequencies are implemented, Emirates will operate 161 weekly flights between various African destinations and Dubai.
Passengers can book tickets through various channels, including emirates.com, the Emirates app, retail stores, the Emirates contact center, or travel agents.
Emirates continues to expand its network to serve more of Africa effectively. With operations in 17 African countries and a global reach extending to 63 countries and territories, Emirates provides unparalleled connectivity, further enhanced by its extensive partnership network. In Africa, the airline collaborates with five codeshare and 18 interline partners, enabling seamless travel to over 210 regional points.
For instance, in 2023, Emirates entered an interline agreement with Royal Air Maroc, allowing travelers to access 18 domestic destinations in Morocco, such as Fez, Tangiers, and Marrakech. The airline also facilitates travel to unique and exclusive locations through partnerships with regional carriers. For example, its agreement with Cemair enables visits to beautiful leisure destinations like Margate and Plettenberg Bay, while its collaboration with Pro Flight Zambia offers unforgettable safari experiences in the Lower Zambezi National Park.
Earlier this month, Emirates resumed direct daily flights to Lagos, Nigeria, connecting the country's economic hub to its global network. With premium travel options available, Emirates is one of only two airlines offering First Class service in and out of Lagos.
Emirates SkyCargo, the airline's cargo division, will also benefit from the increased passenger flights. This expansion complements the eight scheduled freighter services per week, enhancing the efficient movement of goods from Africa to global markets. Emirates SkyCargo demonstrates flexibility in managing capacity by utilizing trucks to transport cargo from Johannesburg to Cape Town and Durban, ensuring timely delivery for customers. The additional passenger flights will help alleviate capacity constraints in these markets as Emirates prepares for future growth with new freighter deliveries expected through 2026.
