A recent video showing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman behind the wheel of one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive hypercars, the Koenigsegg Regera, has drawn a sharp retort from Elon Musk, reigniting their long-standing feud.
The footage, which quickly went viral, depicts Altman driving the Koenigsegg Regera, a limited edition sports car introduced by the Swedish automaker in 2015. With only 80 units ever made, the hybrid car originally sold for upwards of $1.9 million, and second-hand models can fetch over $3 million. The video has garnered over 4 million views and sparked numerous questions about how the CEO of a non-profit could afford such a luxury vehicle.
Comments flooded in on social media, with one user sarcastically remarking, “Who would have thought a non-profit job pays so well.” Another user shared OpenAI’s founding statement, highlighting the organization’s commitment to advancing digital intelligence for the benefit of humanity, not financial gain.

The debate intensified when the Twitter account 'Tesla Owners Silicon Valley' posted the video, asking, “OpenAI CEO driving one of the most expensive cars. How did OpenAI become a for-profit business when it was a non-profit?” Elon Musk responded succinctly with, “Great question.”
To understand the context of this exchange, it’s important to revisit the history between Musk and Altman. In 2015, Musk, Altman, and ten others co-founded OpenAI with the mission of creating a non-profit organization dedicated to democratizing access to AI. However, Musk stepped down from OpenAI's board in 2018.
In February 2024, Musk sued OpenAI and Sam Altman, alleging that they had abandoned the company's original mission to develop AI for humanity’s benefit and had transformed it into a for-profit entity backed by Microsoft, contrary to the founding principles. Although Musk withdrew the lawsuit in early June, his latest comments suggest that tensions between the two tech magnates remain high.
This viral video and Musk’s reaction highlight the ongoing friction between two of Silicon Valley’s most prominent figures, raising questions about the ethical and financial directions of leading AI organizations.
