Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is working on a big project called the smart grid. This project will help Dubai become the smartest and happiest city in the world. DEWA is spending AED 7 billion on this project. The smart grid will make sure electricity and water services work smoothly all the time. It will use special systems that can make decisions on their own and connect different parts of the electricity and water network.
The smart grid will use modern ideas to improve how electricity and water are given to people. It will help these services work better, last longer, and be more reliable. The main goal of the project is to follow the plans of Dubai's leaders, like His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. Their dream is to make Dubai the happiest city by building the best services and systems for everyone.

The head of DEWA, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, said the smart grid project will cost AED 7 billion by the year 2035. He said the project is already showing great results for Dubai. For example, Dubai loses only 2% of electricity during its delivery, while other places like Europe and the United States lose between 6% and 7%. For water, Dubai loses only 4.6%, which is much better than the 15% loss seen in North America. Dubai is also the best in the world at keeping electricity available for people. On average, people in Dubai lose electricity for only 1.06 minutes each year, while in other countries, it is around 15 minutes per year.
DEWA started planning the smart grid in 2014. In 2021, they updated their plan to include new ideas and better systems. One special part of the project is called the Automatic Smart Grid Restoration System. This system is the first of its kind in the Middle East. It can find and fix problems in the power system without needing any person to control it. This system works all the time to make sure electricity is back quickly when there is a problem.
In 2022, DEWA also created a system to collect and study a large amount of information. This helps them improve their services and make better plans for the future. It also helps manage tools like smart meters, which measure electricity and water use in homes and businesses. This system makes sure services are better and helps keep customers happy.
The smart grid also includes a service called the High-Water Usage Alert. This service can find leaks in water pipes after the meter and send alerts to customers. This helps people fix leaks quickly and save water. Between 2019 and the end of 2023, this service found over 1.8 million water leaks, 36,005 defects, and 13,397 cases of extra water use. It has helped people save water and money.
DEWA’s smart grid project has made Dubai one of the best places in the world for reliable electricity and water services. This project shows how much Dubai cares about building a better future with advanced and dependable services for everyone.
