As the U.S. election unfolded, Donald Trump and his supporters spent months warning about the potential for widespread voter fraud. However, as his victory began to take shape, the flood of misinformation about election integrity slowed dramatically. Experts suggest that this shift in narrative points to what critics have long argued: Trump’s preemptive deployment of fraud claims in case he lost, setting the stage for him to challenge the results, as he did following the 2020 election.
One of the most significant moments occurred on Election Day when Trump made a baseless accusation of “massive cheating” in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s largest city, which was crucial for his victory. This claim was quickly denied by local authorities. This false allegation was just the latest in a long line of similar claims, many of which stemmed from his rejection of the 2020 election results—a stance that ultimately led to the violent January 6th Capitol riot as his supporters attempted to overturn Joe Biden's election win.

Philip Mai, co-director of the Toronto-based Social Media Lab, remarked that once the election results started to tilt in Trump’s favor, the flood of fraud allegations dried up. He described the sudden stop in claims as proof that the accusations were never about legitimate concerns but were instead part of a larger political strategy. "As soon as the vote came in swinging their way, Republicans stopped making claims of election fraud late Tuesday, proving yet again it was all a gift," Mai said.
The change in rhetoric was especially noticeable within the so-called "Election Integrity Community," a group that was active on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which was organized by Elon Musk’s America PAC. This community, made up of over 65,000 members, had been reporting alleged irregularities at a rapid pace, posting more than 1,000 times an hour as the election approached. However, after key battleground states began to declare Trump as the victor on November 6, the activity from this group fell sharply, with fewer than 100 posts per hour in the days that followed.
The drop in fraud-related content wasn’t just isolated to X. Platforms that cater to conservative audiences, including Trump’s own Truth Social, saw a significant decrease in election fraud discussions. Welton Chang, co-founder of Pyrra Technologies, which tracks fringe social networks, pointed out that the decline in fraud claims coincided with Trump himself stopping his allegations. “For one thing, Trump himself stopped talking about it,” Chang explained, noting that this led to a ripple effect among his supporters.
Additionally, other prominent Republican figures also stopped promoting the fraud narrative. For instance, when CNN asked hard-line Trump ally Rep. Jim Jordan whether he believed the election was free and fair, he answered affirmatively, dismissing any suggestions that Republicans only raised concerns about fraud when they lost. This contrasted sharply with the heightened rhetoric from Republicans during the 2020 election.
Despite Trump’s victory in all seven battleground states, which positioned him to win the popular vote—a feat he had not achieved in 2016—Democratic leaders did not contest the 2024 election’s results. Both President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris publicly conceded defeat, affirming the outcome as free and fair.
However, the days following the election saw significant online activity among some of Trump’s followers, with hashtags like #DoNotConcedeKamala, featuring terms like "rigged," "fraud," and "stolen," being mentioned more than 30,000 times on X the morning after the election. While a few isolated left-wing voices questioned the integrity of the vote, research from the University of Washington Center for an Informed Public showed that these doubts were not amplified by major candidates or political organizations, in contrast to the widespread efforts on the right.
Danielle Lee Tomson, research manager at the center, pointed out that while there was some doubt cast by individuals on the left, it was far more diffuse and lacked leadership to spread the narrative. She compared the situation to 2020 and 2022, when the right, particularly Trump and his affiliates, had the infrastructure to amplify concerns about election fraud. “Think of it like Trump is the conductor, and there’s a symphony of media and legal infrastructure to really make sure that he won,” Tomson said, highlighting the coordinated effort that had been built over the years.
The drop in fraud allegations following Trump's victory suggests that the widespread claims of election tampering were less about genuine concerns and more about political strategy, aiming to sow doubt and mobilize supporters in case of a loss. With a significant portion of the public still divided over election integrity, the fallout from these claims is likely to shape future election cycles and political discourse in the United States.
