ECC to Approve $2.58m Compensation for Families of Chinese Workers Killed in Dasu Attack

The government is poised to approve a $2.58 million compensation package for Chinese employees of a company targeted in the Dasu terror attack on March 26. A senior official from the Cabinet Division confirmed that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is expected to endorse the package in its upcoming meeting. The ECC has received a summary advocating for the compensation, aimed at supporting the families of the five Chinese workers from China Gezhouba, a contractor on the Dasu Hydropower project.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) has recommended this compensation based on factors such as GDP per capita and purchasing power parity. Additionally, a Rs2.5 million compensation has been proposed for a Pakistani national who also lost their life in the same attack. These funds will be channeled through the Pakistan embassy in Beijing to ensure direct support for the affected families.

The IMC's recommendations follow the tragic incident in Shangla, where six individuals—five Chinese engineers and one Pakistani—lost their lives in an explosive-laden vehicle attack on their bus along the Karakoram Highway in the Bisham area. This act of terror prompted Chinese companies overseeing the Dasu and Diamer-Bhasha Dam projects to temporarily halt civil work due to security concerns. While approximately 991 Chinese engineers were involved in these projects, local staff were instructed to remain at home until further notice.

Chinese authorities have condemned the attack, emphasizing their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Pakistan. Despite the setback, both nations remain resolute in their collaboration across various sectors. This incident underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all personnel engaged in joint endeavors between China and Pakistan.
