Earthquake in Tibet Kills 53, Injures Over 60, Many Buildings Collapse

A strong earthquake hit Tibet on Tuesday morning, killing at least 53 people and causing buildings to collapse. The earthquake took place at 9:05 a.m. local time (0105 GMT) in Tingri, a rural area near the northern entrance to the Everest region. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and was 10 km deep, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

Tremors from the quake were felt in several neighbouring countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, and India. People in Delhi, parts of Bihar, and other North Indian areas also reported shaking buildings.

The earthquake’s epicentre was in Dingri County, just 380 kilometres from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. CCTV reported that at least 53 people have died on the Tibetan side of the border, and several communities near the epicentre were severely damaged.

The earthquake occurred along the border between Nepal and Tibet, where the tectonic plates of India and Eurasia meet. This area is known for strong earthquakes, and the region has experienced several quakes of magnitude 6 or higher in the past 100 years. Tuesday’s earthquake was the largest recorded in the area in the last five years.

In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring more than 22,000. It also destroyed more than half a million homes.

The powerful tremors of this earthquake have shown just how active the region’s fault lines are, with Nepal lying on a major geological boundary where the Indian plate pushes against the Eurasian plate, creating the Himalayan mountains.
