A recent E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounder hamburgers has resulted in the death of one person and left 49 others ill, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The outbreak has predominantly affected residents in Colorado and Nebraska, with slivered onions used in the burgers being suspected as the source of contamination.
The CDC, in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), traced the likely cause to these onions, which prompted McDonald's to halt sales of Quarter Pounders in 12 states, including Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and Utah. The fast-food giant has also stopped using the onions in question while investigations continue. Authorities are still examining whether the hamburger patties themselves could be a secondary cause of contamination. The outbreak has been specifically tied to the E. coli O157 strain, known for causing severe illness.

So far, 10 people have been hospitalized, including a child suffering from a pre-existing condition that complicated their illness. Tragically, a Colorado resident has died due to complications from the infection. Health officials believe the number of cases may actually be higher, as some individuals recover without seeking medical care or being tested. The CDC has warned that this is a “fast-moving outbreak,” with most reported infections occurring among customers who ate the Quarter Pounder between late September and mid-October.
E. coli, or Escherichia coli, is a type of bacteria typically found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains of E. coli are harmless and play a role in maintaining gut health, certain strains, such as E. coli O157, can cause serious foodborne illnesses. This strain is particularly dangerous because it can lead to severe gastrointestinal symptoms and, in some cases, life-threatening complications.
Common symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and sometimes a mild fever. These symptoms typically begin three to four days after exposure to the bacteria but can start as soon as one day or as late as 10 days after infection. While many people recover within five to seven days, some cases can lead to more serious complications. One such complication is hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can affect kidney function and may require hospitalization. HUS is more likely to occur in children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems.
The CDC has advised people to seek medical attention if they experience any of the following symptoms: diarrhea lasting more than three days, a high fever (over 102°F), bloody diarrhea, severe vomiting that prevents keeping liquids down, or signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth, dizziness, or reduced urination. These are indications of a more severe infection and may require urgent treatment.
As the investigation continues, McDonald's has taken swift action to remove the affected ingredients from its supply chain. The company has not only stopped selling Quarter Pounders in the affected states but is also cooperating fully with health authorities to prevent further spread of the outbreak. Investigators are continuing to examine the source of the onions, the potential contamination of other ingredients, and whether other suppliers might be involved.
The fast-food chain's swift response has been praised by some public health officials, but concerns remain about the safety of the broader food supply chain. This outbreak serves as a reminder of the risks associated with large-scale food production and distribution, particularly when dealing with perishable goods like onions and ground beef.
While health authorities work to contain the outbreak and determine its exact cause, they are urging anyone who recently ate a McDonald's Quarter Pounder and experiences symptoms to seek medical care promptly. Public health officials are also emphasizing the importance of reporting cases of foodborne illness to help track and contain outbreaks more efficiently.
