Dubai’s New Performing Arts Programme Unveils Platform for Theatrical Talent

The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is set to launch a groundbreaking series of interactive training workshops under the 'Dubai Performing Arts Programme' this August and September 2024. This initiative is designed to discover, empower, and nurture theatrical talent, aligning with Dubai Culture's commitment to investing in youth and enhancing the city's dynamic cultural and creative landscape.

The programme, hosted at the Dubai National Theatre, will feature three specialized workshops focusing on key aspects of theatrical production: scenography, lighting, and sound. Each workshop will be led by a distinguished cadre of theatre professionals and performing arts experts, providing emerging talents with the tools and knowledge to deepen their understanding and creativity in theatre.

The Scenography workshop, scheduled from August 17 to September 1, will delve into the role and significance of scenography in theatre. Participants will explore the elements of stage design, including its aesthetic and functional aspects, as well as the use of audiovisual tools. The workshop will also cover techniques for designing stage elements and aligning them with the director’s vision.

The Sound Techniques workshop, set for September 8 and 9, will introduce participants to the fundamentals of sound in theatre. Attendees will learn about sound properties, types, and layering, as well as techniques for controlling articulation and breathing to enhance theatrical performances.

On September 13 and 15, the Lighting Techniques workshop will focus on the various types of theatrical lighting, their functions, and their impact on performance. Participants will gain insights into designing lighting that complements the performance and enhances its overall effect.

Fatma Al Jallaf, Acting Director of the Performing Arts Department at Dubai Culture, highlighted the programme's significance in fostering new talent within the Emirati theatre scene. “Theatre is a vital and expressive art form where musical, literary, and visual arts converge. It requires a continual influx of creative talent to sustain and advance artistic projects that reflect our heritage and cultural richness. Dubai Culture is dedicated to creating a platform that cultivates a new generation of theatre artists, discovers promising talents, and equips them to contribute meaningfully to the art form and Dubai’s cultural vitality.”

The workshops are open to all theatre enthusiasts, including both citizens and residents, offering them the opportunity to enhance their skills and unleash their creativity in the performing arts
