Plans unveiled for the "Dubai Mangroves" project promise to transform 72 kilometers of the Emirate's coastline into a lush green haven, with the ambitious planting of over 100 million mangrove trees. Spearheaded by Dubai-based sustainable cities developer URB, the project aims to materialize by 2040 in six phases, focusing on research and development at present.
Renderings released by URB depict an array of features, including boardwalks stretching over mangrove forests, biospheres, pocket beach parks, and communal spaces. The project also incorporates educational and entertainment elements like a visitor hub, botanical museum, and nature reserve conservation center. If realized, the endeavor holds the potential to generate 10,000 green job opportunities while offering guided nature walks, educational programs, and conservation activities.

Identified pilot locations for the project include prominent beaches such as Jebel Ali, Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Public, Umm Suqeim, Mercato, and Dubai Islands. Each site will undergo rigorous testing of innovative coastal regeneration methods to cater to diverse local needs, according to URB CEO Baharash Bagherian.
To fund the venture, a diverse mix of financing sources will be explored, with possibilities ranging from sponsorship and carbon credit investment to participation in environmental education and conservation efforts. URB envisions leveraging cutting-edge technologies like drones and artificial intelligence for mangrove restoration, with drones tasked to plant seeds and satellite imagery aiding in tracking expansion efforts. AI-driven analytics will facilitate outcome prediction and guide restoration endeavors.
The ecological benefits of the project are substantial, with mangroves serving as natural carbon sinks, coastal protectors, and vital ecosystems for marine life and food security. URB estimates that the entire project could sequester 1.23 million tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to the emissions of over 260,000 gasoline-powered vehicles.
The "Dubai Mangroves" initiative aligns with URB's broader vision for sustainable development, following previous ventures like the "Dubai Reefs" floating community for marine research and ecotourism and "The Loop," a proposed climate-controlled cycle highway encircling Dubai.
