Dubai authorities have unveiled a new traffic plan aimed at improving traffic flow throughout the city by expanding the implementation of flexible working hours and remote work policies in both the public and private sectors. The primary objective is to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours.
The specifics of how and when this policy will be implemented are yet to be clarified. Previously, authorities in Dubai had conducted a comprehensive survey to gather insights into the potential efficacy of flexible working hours and remote working in mitigating traffic congestion, especially during peak periods.
Dubai's offices are equipped with the necessary digital infrastructure to facilitate remote work for employees during emergencies. Following unprecedented rainfall in mid-April and early May, both private and government sector offices transitioned to remote work, allowing employees to work from home.

The traffic flow plan, approved by the Executive Council, also includes initiatives such as the development of priority public bus routes to enhance trip times by up to 59%. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) had previously announced plans to expand Dubai's network of dedicated bus lanes to over 20km, with completion slated between 2025 and 2027.
Additionally, the traffic flow plan entails the formulation of a policy to encourage school students to utilize school transport services, which is anticipated to improve traffic flow around schools by 13%.
The approval of the traffic flow plan coincided with Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed's chairing of the Executive Council meeting during the Arabian Travel Market at the World Trade Centre.
Moreover, the council endorsed a policy aimed at enhancing community participation in shaping policy, legislation, and government services. This initiative seeks to enhance service quality by aligning them more closely with community needs and expectations, identified through increased public engagement. The policy is expected to foster collaboration among various stakeholders to enhance the quality of life for all residents of Dubai.
