Dubai RTA & Police Achieve 90% Traffic Fatality Drop Since 2007

Post by: Elena Malik

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police have come together once again to work on making roads safer for everyone. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, head of the RTA, and His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, head of Dubai Police, met to talk about their joint efforts in improving road safety across the city.

They looked at how the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy (2022–2026) is doing so far and discussed new plans to make things even better, like setting up a Personal Mobility Monitoring Unit to watch over electric scooter and bicycle use.

53 Safety Projects Carried Out
Mattar Al Tayer shared that the RTA and Dubai Police have worked together on 53 safety projects in 2024 alone. These projects have played a big role in making Dubai’s roads safer and bringing down the number of deaths and serious injuries from traffic accidents.

He said it’s important to keep the momentum going so that Dubai can reach its goal of “Zero Fatalities” and become one of the safest cities in the world when it comes to road safety.

90% Drop in Road Deaths Since 2007
Lieutenant General Al Marri said that thanks to many years of teamwork and strong action, road deaths in Dubai have dropped by over 90% since 2007. He pointed out that awareness campaigns have been one of the biggest reasons for this success.

In 2024, eight campaigns reached more than 255,000 people. Over 24 educational videos were made to show how dangerous traffic violations can be, and these videos were watched more than 117 million times. These efforts helped people understand traffic rules better and encouraged them to follow the law.

Stronger Traffic Rules and Penalties
The meeting also looked at how traffic rules are being enforced. In 2024, over 145,000 violations were recorded involving delivery motorcycles. There were also 40,000 violations from cyclists and scooter riders, and around 60,000 pedestrian violations.

As a result, authorities took action by seizing 24,000 vehicles, nearly 4,000 delivery bikes, and more than 54,000 personal mobility devices.

Big Improvements in Road Safety Numbers
The 53 road safety projects were spread across four main areas:

Road and vehicle improvements (21 projects)

Traffic systems and management (16 projects)

Public awareness (11 projects)

Traffic rule enforcement (5 projects)

Because of these efforts, the number of road deaths went down from 21.7 per 100,000 people in 2007 to just 1.8 in 2024. Pedestrian deaths dropped from 9.5 to 0.3, and the number of serious injuries also fell sharply. Deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles dropped from 4.2 to 0.45.

The city has also worked on making high-risk areas safer. They looked into 23 locations where accidents happened often, built 54 raised pedestrian crossings, and made changes to protect people using bikes and scooters.

Special Focus on Trucks and Delivery Bikes
Dubai is paying more attention to truck and delivery bike drivers. Trucks make up about 30% of the traffic on some major roads, while motorcycles are 4% of all registered vehicles.

RTA and Dubai Police are launching awareness and inspection campaigns on highways. They’re also checking that delivery riders are trained well and follow the rules. Quality standards for delivery services will also be introduced.

Monitoring Personal Mobility Devices
Bikes and scooters are becoming more popular in Dubai. In 2024, there were 46.6 million bicycle trips (a 5% increase from 2023) and 32.3 million e-scooter trips (up 8.7%). To manage this, a new Personal Mobility Monitoring Unit has been created.

This unit will check if people are following safety rules on bike paths and scooter lanes. They will also help spread awareness and fine those who break the rules.

Road and Transport Plan for 2030
The RTA shared its plan for improving transport in Dubai by 2030. It’s based on four main pillars:

Better Roads: 39 projects are planned to improve major roads, like Latifa bint Hamdan Street, Hessa Street, Al Meydan Street, and many others.

Smart Traffic Policies: New ideas like flexible work hours, remote working, school bus reforms, dynamic toll pricing, and more truck restrictions are being tested to ease traffic.

Public Transport Expansion: Big plans are in place to build the Dubai Metro Blue Line, add more bus and taxi lanes, and improve marine transport.

Intelligent Traffic Systems: Dubai is moving towards 100% smart traffic coverage. Systems will be upgraded to manage accidents better and control traffic lights more efficiently.

A Strong Partnership for a Safer Dubai
The meeting ended with both RTA and Dubai Police praising their strong partnership. Thanks to their teamwork, Dubai is becoming a much safer place to travel, whether by car, bike, scooter, or foot. Their shared vision is clear: fewer accidents, better rules, and a safer future for everyone.
