The Dubai Road Naming Committee, entrusted with the task of naming roads and streets throughout Dubai, has recently introduced the "Street Designation Proposal" platform under the auspices of Dubai Municipality. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing community engagement by inviting public participation in suggesting names for roads across the emirate. The platform's launch aligns closely with the committee's overarching objectives, which include preserving Dubai's rich historical legacy, promoting cultural heritage, and showcasing the city's achievements on a global scale.
H.E. Dawoud Al Hajri, the Director General of Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, underscored the platform's importance in fostering civic involvement. He highlighted its role in integrating public input into the naming process, ensuring that proposed names resonate with Dubai's diverse cultural fabric and future development aspirations. The platform operates as a digital system, facilitating submissions that adhere to comprehensive guidelines and specific criteria aimed at preserving and promoting Dubai's unique identity.

According to Al Hajri, the initiative seeks to revive historical meanings, celebrate local heritage, and honor urban landmarks, thereby reinforcing Dubai's position as a leading global city. By encouraging submissions that reflect traditional Arabic and Islamic influences, artistic and cultural themes, natural phenomena, and environmental sustainability, the committee aims to create a cohesive and meaningful tapestry of road names across various neighborhoods.
The naming classifications established by the committee encompass a wide array of thematic categories. These include names inspired by Arabic and Islamic design, cultural and artistic motifs, local flora and fauna such as plants, trees, flowers, and birds, as well as elements related to environmental sustainability, maritime activities, and traditional professions. The diverse range of categories ensures that each road name contributes to Dubai's narrative of progress while honoring its historical roots and natural surroundings.
In practical terms, members of the public can actively participate in suggesting names for roads and streets through the dedicated platform available at https://roadsnaming.ae. This digital interface provides a user-friendly mechanism for submitting proposals that adhere to the committee's rigorous criteria. It encourages residents, stakeholders, and enthusiasts alike to contribute ideas that reflect their connection to Dubai's cultural heritage and collective identity.
As part of its initial phase, the committee has successfully named roads in the Al-Khawaneej 2 area, using names inspired by local trees, plants, and flowers such as Ghaf Street. Ghaf, a prominent indigenous tree species, symbolizes sustainability and resilience in the local ecosystem. Other streets in the area have been named after Sidr, Reehan, Faghi, Samer, and Shareesh, each contributing to the thematic richness of the locality.
Established by Executive Council Resolution No. (35) of 2021, the Dubai Road Naming Committee operates under the leadership of the Director General of Dubai Municipality, supported by key stakeholders including the Director General of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, CEO of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, and four representatives of Dubai citizens.
The committee's rigorous naming criterion ensures that each road name not only reflects Dubai's national identity but also resonates with its historical, cultural, and social values. By adopting a methodical approach to street naming, the committee aims to create a cohesive and recognizable urban landscape that facilitates navigation and enhances civic pride. This approach marks a significant evolution in Dubai's urban planning strategies, ensuring that future generations inherit a cityscape that is both functional and imbued with cultural significance.
