Dubai-based urban planning and development firm, URB, has unveiled an ambitious proposal to revolutionize coastal regeneration in the city with the Dubai Mangroves project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to plant over 100 million mangrove trees along a 72-kilometer stretch, redefining Dubai's coastline while integrating ecological preservation with urban development.
Aligned with Dubai's environmental objectives and the Dubai 2040 Master Plan, the project underscores themes of urban resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable planning. Currently in the research phase, the project envisages six pilot design studies in specific areas, each showcasing how infrastructure elements can coexist harmoniously with mangrove restoration efforts to create versatile coastal landscapes offering ecological, recreational, and aesthetic benefits.

URB's track record includes notable projects like The Loop and the Dubai Reefs Project. Mangroves, renowned for their carbon sequestration capabilities, coastal protection, and support for marine ecosystems, take center stage in this initiative. With each tree capable of absorbing 12.3 kg of CO2 annually, the project's collective impact could sequester 1.23 million tonnes of CO2 per year—equivalent to the emissions from over 260,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles annually.
Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, emphasizes the project's visionary approach, stating, "Dubai Mangroves epitomizes the harmonious integration of urban and environmental innovation, serving as a global model for cities worldwide. It showcases the transformative potential of blending ecological preservation with urban expansion. Beyond coastal regeneration and resilience, this project sets a benchmark for cities to balance planetary needs with societal aspirations."
Educational components are integral to the project, including the Mangrove Visitor Hub, designed to educate and engage both locals and tourists on mangrove ecosystems and broader environmental issues. Complemented by the Botanical Museum and Nature Reserve Conservation Center, the Hub will serve as a focal point for advocacy, education, and research, fostering environmental stewardship among communities and visitors alike.
