Dubai Hosts International Moot Court on Space Disputes

The inaugural Courts of Space Moot Court, a collaborative effort between the Dubai Future Foundation and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts, commenced with a hybrid competition held from May 7 to May 21. The event saw participation from 15 university teams, engaging in preliminary and quarter-final rounds over four days. The semi-finals and final rounds were hosted at the DIFC Courts.

Students participating in the moot gained valuable insights into the application of DIFC Courts Rules concerning conflicts such as breach of contract and regulations related to space tourism. The competition also featured scenarios designed to simulate potential legal challenges arising in the evolving domain of space law.

In the final round, Hamad Bin Khalifa University and Gujarat National Law University competed, with Hamad Bin Khalifa University emerging victorious. The event was supported by partners including Middlesex University, webnyay, and Space Monitor Middle East, who recognized and awarded the winning team and outstanding individuals.

His Excellency Justice Omar Al Mheiri, Director of DIFC Courts, emphasized the significance of the Courts of Space initiative in positioning Dubai as a leader in handling commercial space disputes. He highlighted the specialized training judges are undergoing to adjudicate disputes related to the space economy, underscoring the project's role in shaping the future generation of space lawyers.

Launched as part of the Courts of the Future initiative in 2021, the Courts of Space project aims to advance judicial systems in handling emerging legal challenges in space law. His Excellency Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of Dubai Future Foundation, affirmed Dubai's commitment to innovation and collaboration in addressing complex issues like space law, positioning the city as a hub for pioneering legal frameworks.

Amnas Al Owais, Chief Registrar at DIFC Courts, emphasized the proactive approach of anticipating legal challenges posed by advancements in science and space exploration. She highlighted the importance of establishing DIFC Courts as a preferred venue for resolving commercial disputes arising from space activities.

Lidia Kamleh, Chief of Legal Affairs at Dubai Future Foundation, praised the Moot Court competition for fostering innovative thinking and tackling complex issues in space law. She emphasized the role of legal innovation in shaping future technologies and frameworks, reflecting Dubai Future Foundation's commitment to driving transformative change.

The UAE's strategic focus on space exploration since 2020 underscores its ambition to enhance its global standing in trade, finance, and technology. The Courts of Space initiative aligns with these ambitions, aiming to establish Dubai as a center for resolving commercial disputes related to space activities, ensuring legal frameworks keep pace with technological advancements.
