Dubai Forum Commemorates 40 Years of Diplomatic Ties Between UAE and China

The Dubai Forum recently celebrated four decades of diplomatic relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China, bringing together influential leaders and innovators from various sectors to explore new opportunities for collaboration and cooperation. The event, themed "40 Years Together for New Developments," took place at the iconic Armani Hotel Dubai and was co-organized by several notable institutions, including the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Dubai, the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO), the China Public Diplomacy Association, and Dubai Chambers. 

Over 400 representatives from political, business, academic, and media sectors attended the forum to discuss ways to enhance collaboration between the two nations. The event featured keynote addresses and three key sessions focused on "New Energy," "New Generation," and "New Media," all aimed at fostering synergies and promoting sustainable development.

Among the distinguished speakers were His Excellency Zhang Yiming, Chinese Ambassador to the UAE; His Excellency Abdulla Al Saleh, Under Secretary of Foreign Trade and Industry at the Ministry of Economy; His Excellency Ou Boqian, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Dubai; and His Excellency Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah, President and CEO of Dubai Chambers. They highlighted the deepening ties between the two nations, attributing the strengthened partnership to recent high-level visits, including those by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Excellency Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. 

Ambassador Zhang noted that the bilateral relationship is currently at its strongest, with both countries enjoying pragmatic cooperation across various sectors. He emphasized the importance of aligning development strategies to explore mutual growth opportunities, citing impressive trade figures. In the first half of 2024, bilateral trade exceeded $50 billion, with expectations to surpass $100 billion by year’s end. Looking to the future, he expressed confidence in achieving $200 billion in trade by the 2030s. 

Her Excellency Mona Al Marri, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Dubai Media Council, underscored the forum's role in enhancing UAE-China collaboration through media, stating that "new media technologies can play an important role in enhancing cultural understanding." Similarly, His Excellency Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah emphasized the UAE and China’s commitment to sustainable development and their dedication to fostering partnerships that stimulate commercial and trading growth. 

The forum's sessions tackled critical topics such as green transformation and youth empowerment. The "New Energy" session discussed sustainable development goals and strategies to implement the UAE Consensus reached at COP28. The "New Generation" session aimed to empower youth in both nations, fostering cross-cultural engagement and leadership development. 

Maryam Al Mulla, Director of the Dubai Press Club, addressed the significance of media as a tool for international cooperation, emphasizing its ability to bridge cultural divides. She noted that collaboration in the media sector could significantly strengthen the UAE-China partnership. 

Supported by various organizations, including Emaar Properties and Huawei Technologies UAE, the forum concluded with a renewed commitment to deepening bilateral ties. The discussions set the stage for future cooperation in sectors that will drive progress for both nations. 

The UAE-China relationship has grown robustly, with non-oil trade reaching AED296 billion ($81 billion) in 2023. China continues to be the UAE’s largest non-oil trading partner, reinforcing the strategic ties that were further enhanced by the UAE’s active participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). 

Overall, the Dubai Forum not only celebrated the past but also envisioned a future filled with collaborative opportunities that promise mutual growth and prosperity for both countries.
