The Dubai International Marine Club has officially announced the formation of the Supreme Organising Committee for the 35th edition of the prestigious Al Gaffal Race for 60-feet traditional dhows, one of the UAE’s most iconic maritime sporting events.
The race will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. The decision was approved during the club’s second Board of Directors meeting for 2026.
Leadership of the Organising Committee
The newly formed Supreme Committee will be chaired by Dr. Ahmed Saeed bin Meshar, while Saif Juma Al Suwaidi has been appointed Vice-Chairman. Other members include Khalid Khamis bin Dismal, Khalid Ali Al Balooshi, and Mohammed Abdullah Harib (CEO, Dubai International Marine Club). Mohammed Fadhel Al Sadi will serve as the Committee Rapporteur.
Strong support for maritime heritage
Dr. Ahmed Bin Meshar expressed gratitude for the continued support of Dubai’s leadership in promoting marine sports and preserving national heritage. He highlighted that the Al Gaffal Race, first launched in 1991, remains a symbol of the UAE’s deep-rooted connection with the sea and its seafaring traditions.
The race is widely recognized as one of the most important heritage marine sporting events in the Gulf region, celebrating the historic journey of pearl divers returning to shore after long voyages.
Race history and significance
Since its inception, the Al Gaffal Race has grown into a major cultural and sporting spectacle, attracting over 3,000 participants annually. The race covers more than 50 nautical miles, showcasing endurance, teamwork, and traditional sailing skills.
In its 34th edition, held on 2 May last year, over 110 dhows participated, with Zilzal 25 claiming victory near Burj Al Arab.
Safety and scheduling updates
In light of current regional developments, the organising committee will closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety of all participants and officials. The race is tentatively proposed between 16 and 31 May, subject to ongoing review.
Authorities are also developing contingency plans and ensuring full logistical readiness in coordination with relevant government bodies to maintain the highest safety standards.
