Dubai residents are still reeling from the aftermath of last week's unprecedented rainfall and subsequent flooding, which wreaked havoc on several buildings and communities across the city. With many areas facing prolonged power outages and water shortages, residents have been forced to seek alternative solutions to cope with the disruptions to their daily lives.
In The Greens neighborhood of Dubai, several apartment blocks have been inundated by floodwaters, leaving residents without essential utilities since Tuesday, April 16. Rupa Sarkar, an Indian resident of The Greens, shared her experience, stating, "It's been almost five days since the authorities started working to clear the water from the basement. In our building, they had to cut off electricity because the entire basement was filled with water."

With electricity restoration efforts still ongoing, affected tenants have turned to their community for support. Rupa and her neighbors have relied on the kindness of friends who provided food during the initial days of the crisis. Subsequently, the building management arranged temporary accommodation in hotels until electricity could be restored. However, uncertainty looms as Rupa mentions, "We are checking out the hotel on Monday evening. The building management has arranged generators for temporary solutions, but we are not sure if electricity is back yet."
In Discovery Gardens, another affected area, Indian expatriate Veera Akula faced similar hardships due to the prolonged power outage. Veera recounted, "On Tuesday, exactly at 3 pm, the building lost its power after water poured into the transformers and damaged some wires. Since that day, it hasn't been restored." Without access to backup generators and with water supplies also disrupted, Veera sought refuge in a hotel until he was notified of the restoration of water services on Friday. However, the absence of electricity meant enduring dark nights in his apartment, prompting him to rely on friends for assistance and meals.
Meanwhile, in Al Barsha, Egyptian mother Ihsan Derwish found herself in a similar predicament when electricity was cut off at her residence on Wednesday, April 17. With her husband away in Sharjah until Thursday, Ihsan had to navigate the challenges alone, including carrying her toddler down six flights of stairs due to the lack of elevator access. Despite the initial difficulties, Ihsan found solace in the supportive community around her building, which helped alleviate some of the burdens she faced.
However, the absence of electricity not only disrupted daily routines but also impacted education, as Ihsan's children were unable to attend online classes without internet access. Concerned for her family's well-being, Ihsan made the decision to seek shelter with her sister-in-law once her husband returned home on Thursday.
While authorities work tirelessly to restore normalcy, residents like Rupa, Veera, and Ihsan continue to endure the challenges brought about by the recent flooding, relying on resilience and community support to weather the crisis.
