Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has approved a comprehensive plan aimed at constructing dedicated lanes for buses and taxis across six major streets in the city. These streets include Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, 2nd of December, Al Satwa, Al Nahda, Omar bin Al Khattab, and Naif Streets. Scheduled for completion between 2025 and 2027, this project will extend Dubai’s network of dedicated bus lanes to a total of 20.1km.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors at RTA, emphasized that these dedicated lanes are in line with global best practices and successful transportation policies. They aim to encourage residents to utilize public transport instead of private vehicles, ultimately shortening travel times, ensuring adherence to bus timetables, increasing public transport ridership, and enhancing the efficiency of taxi services. Moreover, the project seeks to reduce operational costs, integrate various transport modes, and decrease emissions, thereby contributing to strategic goals such as promoting an integrated Dubai and enhancing public well-being and happiness.

Al Tayer further elaborated on the expected impact of the project, highlighting significant reductions in bus travel times during peak hours, ranging from 24 to 59 percent across different routes. Notably, the dedicated lanes are anticipated to reduce bus journey times by 59 percent on Naif Street, 54 percent on Al Satwa Road, 50 percent on Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, and 38 percent on Al Nahda Street. Additionally, bus arrival times are projected to improve by 56 percent on 2nd of December Street, 52 percent on Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, 48 percent on Al Satwa Road, and 42 percent on Omar bin Khattab Street.
Furthermore, the extension of dedicated bus lanes is expected to increase public transport usage by up to 30 percent on certain roads while reducing the number of buses needed to serve these routes due to the savings in travel times.
Al Tayer noted that previous phases of the project have already demonstrated positive outcomes, with trip times for buses on certain routes being reduced by approximately five minutes per bus, representing an improvement of around 24 percent.
Previously, RTA had opened dedicated bus lanes spanning 7km, including combined bus and taxi lanes on Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road, Naif Street, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, and Al Ghubaiba Road. These initiatives reflect RTA's commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure and promoting sustainable mobility solutions in Dubai.
