Shocking footage has emerged from southern Minnesota, revealing the dire condition of the Rapidan Dam amid severe storms and flooding. Built in the early 1900s, the dam is reportedly on the brink of failure following days of relentless rains that triggered widespread flooding, claiming at least two lives and causing extensive damage across the region.
Videos circulating online depict a massive volume of water swirling around the dam, engulfing a nearby building as debris, including dead trees, accumulates in the fast-flowing currents. The situation has been described as a "partial failure" by officials, with concerns mounting over the dam's structural integrity, which is deemed to be in an "imminent failure condition."

According to reports from the Washington Post, the torrential rains led to overtopped levees, destroyed homes, flooded farmland, and even caused the collapse of a major railroad bridge. The unfolding crisis has prompted urgent responses from local authorities and emergency services.
Xcel Energy reported that one of its substations, providing power to 600 customers, was swept away downstream during the overflow. Despite the water level at the dam reaching 28 feet, officials have indicated that the structure remains intact as of Tuesday afternoon. There have been no immediate plans for a widespread evacuation, although residents in vulnerable areas have been alerted to the ongoing risks.
The Rapidan Dam, situated on the Blue Earth River and capable of generating 6 million watts of hydroelectric power, is owned by the county and serves as a critical infrastructure near Mankato, a city of approximately 45,000 residents. The dam's precarious state underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather events and the critical importance of dam safety measures, as highlighted by FEMA guidelines citing reasons for dam failures, including overtopping during floods and structural deficiencies.
