Dhaka, Bangladesh – Students from Dhaka University took to the streets in a powerful show of solidarity with ongoing protests in India over the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The demonstration, held under the banner "Awaaz Tolo Nari" on Friday, was centered at the iconic Raju Sculpture on the university's campus.

The rally was driven by a collective call for justice and a demand for accountability. Rahnuma Ahmed Niret, a student from the Department of Physics, voiced the group's concerns about the handling of the Moumita rape case in Upper Bengal. “We are aware of the non-cooperative attitude of the medical college administration regarding this case. As women, we demand that the administration provide maximum legal assistance, strictly enforce the law, and deliver a swift verdict,” Niret stated, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.

Anya Fahmin, a student from the Department of Anthropology, echoed the call for global solidarity. “Women worldwide face the threat of rape, and we fully support the ongoing movement for fair accountability in the RG Kar Hospital case. We also demand a public trial for the rape and murder of Sohagi Jahan Tonu in Comilla. The public has a right to know, especially when the army is involved. The government must ensure a safe environment for women through a united student uprising,” Fahmin declared.

Lamisha Jahan from Jahangirnagar University added her voice to the protest, emphasizing the need to expose perpetrators. “In past rape incidents, victims’ names have been publicized while the guilty often remain hidden. Sometimes, these cases are covered up by the government or ruling party. The days of complacency are over. We must raise our voices against all forms of humiliation towards women,” Jahan asserted.

Anika Arefin Anu from the Department of Finance stressed the importance of student activism. “We must build a safe country for women. Students played a crucial role in past uprisings, and we must now compel our government to prosecute all rape cases and ensure women’s safety,” Anu emphasized.

The protest was sparked by the brutal assault and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. This horrific incident has fueled widespread protests across India, demanding justice for the victim.

In solidarity with the Indian protests, Dhaka University students also organized an “Occupy the Night” event, echoing calls for a thorough investigation and justice for rape victims in Bangladesh. The evening saw students gathering at the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture, where teachers and prominent figures voiced their support for victims worldwide.

Earlier, the students marched across campus with placards bearing slogans like “Poshaker Bahanay Par Pabena Kono Pisach” and “Proshno Jokhon Sadhinotar, Bangla Jure Oyaddedar”. Ania Fahmin pointed out the troubling trend in Bangladesh, where many rape cases are not filed or rarely reach trial, often only becoming known through social media.

Fahmin highlighted that the RG Kar incident has underscored persistent issues and reinforced the necessity for exemplary punishment for perpetrators.
