DEWA SAT-1 Sends 2,690 MB of Data to Ground Station for Space-D Program

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has shared exciting news about its small satellite, DEWA-SAT 1. Since it was sent into space in January 2022, this satellite has sent 2,690 megabytes (MB) of important information to DEWA’s station on the ground. This small satellite is part of DEWA’s Space-D programme, which helps the company use modern tools to make its services better.

DEWA-SAT 1 is a small satellite, known as a 3U nanosatellite. It can send information directly using an Internet of Things (IoT) system. It uses a special technology called LoRa, which helps send information over long distances without using a lot of power. DEWA also uses strong security methods to protect the information it receives, so it stays safe and private.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the head of DEWA, said that DEWA is working hard to use new technology to make its services smarter and more efficient. The Space-D programme is one way DEWA is doing this. With the help of satellites, DEWA can check its equipment in faraway places. This helps the company plan better, fix problems before they get big, and operate its power and water networks more smoothly. It also helps DEWA save money and use its equipment in the best way possible.

The Space-D programme is also helping train DEWA’s team. DEWA is teaching its Emirati workers how to use these new tools and giving them special training to become experts.

DEWA is the first company in the world to use small satellites like this to make electricity and water services better. These satellites help DEWA collect information from space and use it to make sure everything works well.

DEWA’s ground station is at its Research and Development Centre in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This station is run by a team of Emirati workers who have been trained to use advanced tools to control the satellites.

As part of the Space-D programme, DEWA sent DEWA-SAT 1 into space in January 2022. Later, in April 2023, another satellite, DEWA-SAT 2, was launched. Both satellites are being used to watch DEWA’s equipment and make its services better.

DEWA-SAT 1 helps DEWA in many ways. It watches power equipment to check how well it works. It monitors water pipes to look for problems, like changes in temperature, pressure, or flow. It also checks the weather, measuring things like temperature, humidity, and air quality. It even collects data from faraway power stations.

DEWA has also worked with other experts to write seven research papers about DEWA-SAT 1. These papers explain how the satellite works and how it uses LoRa technology to send information.

DEWA’s Space-D programme is a big step forward. By using satellites, DEWA is showing how technology can help improve services. This programme is helping Dubai move toward a smarter and more sustainable future.
