The Department of Community Development (DCD) in Abu Dhabi has announced the findings from the second round of the Sports and Physical Activity Survey, which provides valuable insights into community engagement with physical activity and sports in the emirate. This comprehensive survey aims to identify patterns and trends, helping to shape future initiatives and policies aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle among residents.
The results revealed a notable increase in the average rate of physical activity within Abu Dhabi, rising to an impressive 50.16% compared to just 36% in the first round of the survey. This significant improvement aligns with the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendations, which suggest that adults should engage in at least 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity or 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week.
The DCD reported that participation in this second round surged by over 92%, with 19,289 individuals from various backgrounds and segments of society taking part in the survey. Among those surveyed, 38% of People of Determination were found to meet the WHO's recommended standards for weekly physical activity, a marked increase from the 12% recorded in the previous cycle.

His Excellency Mohamed Helal Al Balooshi, the Executive Director of the Community Engagement and Sports Sector at DCD, emphasized the organization's commitment to fostering a healthy and active community. He stated, “DCD aims to promote a healthy and active society and encourages community members to adopt active lifestyles—attributes that contribute to building a culture of sports and good health in society.” He also noted that the results of this second survey reflect tangible improvements in community interest in physical activity and sports.
The DCD has made strides in strengthening the physical activity framework within the emirate. This includes developing supportive policies for institutions involved in the sports sector, fostering collaborations with relevant authorities to enhance sports facilities, and launching initiatives that encourage a culture of health and physical activity in Abu Dhabi.
His Excellency expressed gratitude for the Abu Dhabi Sports Council's (ADSC) efforts in organizing community sports events and hosting international competitions. These initiatives have significantly impacted the community by promoting physical activities among diverse cultural groups. He also acknowledged the council's recent recognition at the Middle East and North Africa Stevie Awards 2023 for programs like Abu Dhabi 360 and the Active Hub.
His Excellency Ahmed Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Strategic Planning and Excellence Sector at ADSC, reiterated the council's dedication to promoting projects that contribute to a healthier community. He emphasized the importance of encouraging residents to adopt healthy lifestyles, which ultimately enhances the overall quality of life in Abu Dhabi. Al Hosani remarked, “The Sports and Physical Activity Survey has reached its second stage, adding substantial insights after the first stage's success in analyzing physical activity trends in the emirate.”
The survey results also highlighted that 11.08% of children and adolescents engage in 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Among People of Determination, 70% participated in sports and sporting events. The findings indicated that 40% of participants regularly walk or run, with football being the most popular sport at 25%, followed by swimming at 18%.
Additionally, 57% of participants reported using various sports facilities, such as fitness clubs, parks, and dedicated walking and jogging paths. Interestingly, 59% obtained information about sports techniques, equipment, and safety from online sources, while 25% relied on trainers and specialists for guidance. Overall, 76% expressed satisfaction with the quality of available sports facilities.
However, the survey also revealed some barriers to participation. About 64% of respondents indicated that they do not prioritize sports in their lives, and 33% expressed concerns about their appearance while engaging in physical activities. A significant 26% attributed their lack of exercise to time constraints. Despite these challenges, satisfaction with sporting events stood at 82%, although 53% of participants cited the distance from their homes as a reason for not attending.
The findings of this survey provide a comprehensive view of the current state of sports and physical activity in Abu Dhabi, highlighting both the successes and areas for improvement. The DCD remains committed to fostering a vibrant culture of health and fitness, encouraging all residents to embrace active lifestyles and participate in community sporting activities.
