A Delta Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit encountered a disturbing incident when maggots started falling on passengers seated in the economy section from an overhead compartment. The flight, identified as Delta Flight 133 AMS-DTW, had to divert and return to Amsterdam an hour after takeoff.
The unsettling episode was a result of a passenger's improperly packed carry-on bag, which contained rotting fish that had become infested with maggots. Passengers in the economy seats reported the insects raining down on them from the overhead bin, prompting the decision to turn the plane around.
Upon landing, all passengers were instructed to de-board, and the suitcase containing the infested fish was securely bagged for disposal. The aircraft underwent a comprehensive cleaning procedure to ensure the removal of any remaining insects or contaminants, as reported by The Independent.
Passengers took to social media platforms to share their harrowing experiences. One passenger, Kelce, expressed her dismay on Twitter, stating, "Really lovely to be 2 hours into an 8-hour @Delta to Amsterdam and find out there is rotten fish and maggots hitching a ride with us."
Another passenger shared their experience on Reddit, noting that the maggots were not only falling on passengers but also seen wiggling around on the seats. The user mentioned that the flight attendants moved them to a different section after they reported the issue. Furthermore, the post highlighted that the passenger responsible for the improperly packed bag didn't exit the plane at the end of the flight.
The Reddit post concluded with the mention that five of their suitcases didn't make it to their destination due to the unfortunate incident.
In response to the incident, Delta Airlines issued an apology, acknowledging the disruption caused by the improperly packed carry-on bag. The airline explained that the aircraft returned to the gate, passengers were accommodated on the next available flight, and the aircraft underwent a thorough cleaning process before returning to service. The statement conveyed regret for the inconvenience caused to the customers of Flight 133 AMS-DTW.
