Delhi Hospital Where Babies Died Lacked License Fire Exits

In the Indian capital of Delhi, a devastating fire claimed the lives of seven babies in a hospital that was operating without a valid license. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, resulting in the arrest of the hospital owner and the attending doctor. An investigation revealed alarming safety lapses, as the hospital lacked fire extinguishers and emergency exits. This catastrophic event unfolded shortly after another fire tragedy in Gujarat's Rajkot city, which claimed the lives of 27 individuals.

The hospital, located in Delhi's Vivek Vihar neighborhood, was engulfed in flames, prompting widespread shock and outrage. According to Police Commissioner Surendra Chaudhary, the hospital's No Objection Certificate (NOC) had expired on March 31, and it was only permitted for five beds, yet it had installed 10.

At the time of the fire, 12 newborn babies were under care at the hospital. Tragically, five of them are now receiving treatment elsewhere. The hospital director, Dr. Naveen Kichi, and a doctor identified only as Dr. Akash were arrested on charges of culpable homicide. It was revealed that Dr. Akash, who was on duty during the incident, lacked the qualifications to provide intensive care to newborns.

The Delhi government has initiated a magisterial inquiry into the incident to ascertain accountability. Dramatic footage of the fire circulated on social media platforms, depicting the intensity of the blaze. Delhi's fire department chief, Atul Garg, attributed the fire's spread to an oxygen cylinder explosion. Additionally, authorities are probing allegations of the hospital's involvement in an illegal oxygen cylinder filling racket.

Rescue efforts were hindered by the building's limited access, featuring only a single staircase and no fire escape. Expressing grief over the tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pledged a thorough investigation and accountability for any negligence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as "heart-rending" and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased and the injured.
