Deadly Tornadoes Leave Millions Without Power in Texas Storm

Severe weather ravaged Texas on Tuesday, leaving over 1 million customers without electricity. The aftermath of the storm continued into Wednesday, with widespread power outages persisting across the state. Tragically, a teenager lost his life at a construction site in Houston when a home he was working on collapsed amid the fierce weather.

This latest bout of severe weather was part of a larger pattern of deadly storms that swept across the United States during the Memorial Day weekend, claiming 24 lives across seven states. In Houston, the recent deluge exacerbated the city's struggles, coming just weeks after a powerful derecho wreaked havoc, leaving eight people dead and hundreds of thousands without power.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo expressed concern over the repeated challenges faced by residents, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to recover from previous disasters. The situation prompted FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell to travel to Arkansas, one of the hardest-hit states, for further assessment of tornado damage.

The forecast for Wednesday included continued threats of heavy rains, localized flooding, and severe weather across Oklahoma and Texas. Thunderstorms were predicted to sweep through eastern Montana, Wyoming, northeast Colorado, and then into Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and northern Texas.

The power outages in the Dallas area prompted officials to extend polling hours for the state's runoff elections. The city also opened respite centers to provide shelter and relief from the scorching conditions caused by winds gusting up to 80 mph. Local crews embarked on an intensive effort to clear debris and fallen trees, with some homes sustaining significant damage.

Images circulated on social media depicted the powerful winds pushing an American Airlines plane away from its gate at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. While no injuries were reported, the severe weather disrupted air travel, with hundreds of flights canceled at both Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport.

In Houston, where over 300,000 customers were without power, tragedy struck as a 16-year-old construction worker lost his life when a home under construction collapsed during the storm. The National Weather Service warned of a continued "very active and highly impactful" weather pattern in the central U.S., indicating little relief in the near future.

The weekend's destructive storms spanned multiple states, leaving a trail of devastation and loss. In addition to the human toll, unusual weather phenomena such as "gustnadoes" added to the chaos, highlighting the unpredictable and hazardous nature of the recent weather events.
