Deadly Russian Strike Hits Sumy, Ukraine

A deadly missile strike hit the city of Sumy in northern Ukraine on Sunday, killing 34 people and hurting 117 others. The attack, done by two Russian missiles, is now the deadliest one in Ukraine this year.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked world leaders to give a strong answer to Russia. The attack happened at a time when peace efforts have not made much progress.

Leaders from the UK, Germany, and Italy also blamed Russia. The German leader said the attack shows how little Russia really wants peace.

A top U.S. official gave condolences to the victims and said this attack is a sad reminder of why peace talks must move faster.

Zelenskyy invited the U.S. president to come to Ukraine and see the damage. He said: “Please come and see the people, the children, the churches, the hospitals — all hurt or gone.”

When asked if Ukraine still had strong support from the U.S., Zelenskyy paused and said, “I want to say yes quickly, but the pause shows that there is some doubt.” He added that the American people still support Ukraine, but in a long war, many things are forgotten.

He also asked the U.S. to help more by protecting Ukraine’s skies and joining a peacekeeping group.

Talks between U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian officials have taken place, but no real progress has been made to stop the war. Russia hasn’t answered questions about the strike and keeps saying it doesn’t target civilians — even though many have died since the war started in 2022.

Later on Sunday, another Russian drone hit the city of Odesa, hurting five people and damaging a medical building.

Earlier this month, another attack happened in Kryvyi Rih, killing 20 people. This city is far from the frontlines, showing how wide the war has spread.

Sumy is near the Russian border and has about 250,000 people. It became important in the war when Ukraine started fighting into Russian land last year. After Sunday’s attack, the acting mayor announced three days of mourning.

Ukraine’s interior minister said people were walking, driving, or in buildings when the missiles hit. He called it “a planned attack on people on a special church day.”

Right now, Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine’s land in the east and south. Its army is slowly moving forward in the east.

An international court is checking for war crimes in the conflict. The U.S. also said in March that both countries agreed not to attack each other’s power systems — but both sides say the other has broken the deal.

On Sunday, Russia said Ukraine had hit two of its energy sites. A U.S. peace official also met with Russia’s leader last week to try and help start a peace plan, but no agreement was made.
