"We are educated, progressive people. Hum modern log hain." This catchphrase captures the essence of De De Pyaar De 2, a rom-com that tackles modern relationships with humor and heart. The film stands out for portraying women as independent, vocal, and not mere trophies—refreshing in a genre often guilty of regressive tropes.
Rakul Preet Singh plays Ayesha, a strong-willed woman in love with her mature, divorced boyfriend, Ashish (Ajay Devgn). Her parents, Rakesh and Anu (R. Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor), are progressive, sexually active, and supportive—but their modern facade cracks when they learn Ashish is older than Rakesh. Madhavan steals the show as the overbearing, jealous father, injecting humor while questioning societal norms around age and relationships.
Despite Ajay Devgn’s limited screen time, his presence is impactful as a calm, mature partner. Supporting actors—including Jaaved and Meezaan Jaaferi, Suhasini Mulay, and Ishita Dutta—add warmth, comedy, and depth, with standout moments like bonding over Punjabi breakfast or grandparental wisdom.
The film boldly addresses ageism, patriarchy, emotional blackmail, and double standards, making space for honest conversations. Ayesha’s independence and agency highlight a shift from traditional rom-com portrayals of women. The movie also nods to pop culture and Bollywood classics, giving it playful charm without diluting its message.
De De Pyaar De 2 is an entertaining, progressive rom-com that balances comedy with thoughtful exploration of modern relationships. It respects its audience, challenges norms, and still leaves room for laughter—even if the occasional expletive is censored.
