Cyclone Remal, heralding the onset of the cyclone season, has left a trail of destruction across Bangladesh and India, claiming the lives of 16 individuals, as reported by Reuters on Monday evening.
The cyclone, packing winds reaching speeds of up to 135 kph, made landfall near the Bay of Bengal coast, striking the vicinity of Bangladesh's southern port of Mongla and the adjoining Sagar Islands in West Bengal late Sunday night.
The aftermath of Cyclone Remal has been marked by devastating consequences, with at least 10 fatalities reported in Bangladesh and the remaining casualties recorded in West Bengal, as per Reuters. Reports indicate that some victims succumbed while en route to relief shelters, while others fell victim to drowning or collapsed homes amid heavy waterlogging and fierce storms.

In West Bengal, the toll included four individuals electrocuted by downed power lines, elevating the state's death count to six. The cyclone's impact also ravaged power infrastructure, leading to widespread electricity outages in coastal areas.
The severe disruption in power supply left nearly three million people in Bangladesh and thousands in West Bengal grappling with darkness. Bengal authorities noted the uprooting of at least 1,200 power poles and the destruction of 300 mud huts.
Anticipating the cyclone's wrath, Bangladesh preemptively shut down electricity supplies in vulnerable regions. However, fallen trees and damaged power lines further impeded efforts to restore electricity, exacerbating the plight of affected coastal communities.
In the wake of Cyclone Remal, heavy rainfall inundated the streets of Kolkata on May 27, triggering flooding and structural collapses. Over 50 flights were canceled on Sunday, but operations resumed as normal on Monday. Suburban train services, initially disrupted, were also reinstated.
Both India and Bangladesh swiftly mobilized relief efforts, relocating over a million individuals to shelters amidst the deluge and rising water levels along the coast. Despite the challenges posed by the cyclone's fury, efforts to mitigate its impact and restore normalcy are underway, underscoring the resilience and preparedness of communities in the face of natural disasters.
