Curious Dog Sparks House Fire by Oven; Apple HomePod Alerts and Saves Family

The Colorado Springs Fire Department recently shared a startling video capturing a dog inadvertently causing a house fire while its owners were asleep. The incident occurred around 4:40 am last month in Colorado, where the dog managed to turn on the oven, igniting boxes placed on top. The kitchen surveillance footage, widely viewed on Facebook, shows the dog accidentally activating the oven controls and the ensuing flames that quickly engulfed the kitchen.

Fortunately, the family was alerted to the fire by their Apple HomePod, which detected "High Heat" and promptly notified them. One of the household members acted swiftly to extinguish the flames before contacting emergency services. Engine 23 from the fire department responded to the call, although upon arrival, they found no visible signs of smoke or fire due to the fire being contained.

Despite the swift response, one of the homeowners required treatment for smoke inhalation at a local hospital. Thankfully, neither the family members nor their pet sustained any other injuries.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department used the incident to stress the importance of functional smoke alarms throughout homes, advising that alarms be installed inside and outside every sleeping area and on every floor. They also emphasized keeping combustible items away from stovetops and ovens and knowing multiple escape routes in case of emergencies.

The viral incident sparked discussion online, with some users criticizing the homeowners for not taking preventive measures, such as keeping flammable items away from cooking surfaces. Others highlighted the broader safety implications, noting that similar accidents involving children and pets are not uncommon and urging adults to secure gas valves and take necessary precautions.
