Following the U.S. removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Cuba finds itself in a challenging period marked by uncertainty. Historically, Venezuela has been Cuba’s closest ally and a vital source of oil. The absence of Maduro has sparked fears among Cubans that their already fragile economy may deteriorate further.
On Monday, flags were lowered across Havana to commemorate 32 Cuban security personnel who lost their lives during the U.S. operation in Venezuela. Officials stated that these officers perished while safeguarding key facilities or engaging in direct conflict. This loss resonated deeply within Cuba, where Venezuela has always been viewed as a brother nation.
The bond between the two nations is profound. Many Cuban soldiers and security personnel served as protectors for Maduro, while Venezuela supplied subsidized oil to Cuba over the years. This oil has been crucial for maintaining electricity and transportation on the island, especially during a time of daunting shortages and frequent blackouts.
After Maduro's downfall, U.S. President Donald Trump alerted that Cuba is next to face repercussions. He indicated that severing ties between Cuba and Venezuela could further endanger its economy, which is already under immense strain. His remarks have heightened anxiety among everyday Cubans, many of whom struggle to secure basic necessities.
Analysts estimate that Venezuela was dispatching around 35,000 barrels of oil daily to Cuba in recent months, fulfilling nearly one-quarter of the island's requirements. A halt in those shipments would be devastating, as Cuba lacks the financial resources to acquire oil on the global market, likely resulting in prolonged and more frequent power outages.
Some experts suggest that Russia remains the sole potential ally that could provide Cuba with oil support. While Russia already sends limited quantities, it is uncertain whether it will escalate assistance. Others propose that China might intervene, but only if Cuba undertakes significant reforms to liberalize its economy and scale back state control.
Meanwhile, discussions are underway in the United States to rebuild Venezuela’s faltering oil infrastructure. Trump has indicated that oil companies might consider investing billions to revitalize production, with potential support from the U.S. government for associated costs. If successful, Venezuela’s oil production could rebound within a year or two; however, political upheaval and exorbitant costs cloud this prospect.
For Cuba right now, survival is the pressing issue. Blackouts are commonplace, and widespread food shortages have left many families in despair. Losing access to Venezuelan oil could exacerbate an already difficult situation into an outright crisis.
As the region adapts to a shifting political landscape, Cuba finds itself at a pivotal juncture. Without Venezuela’s backing, the island might need to rethink its economic strategies or pursue new allies. In the interim, many Cubans can do little more than hope for brighter days ahead.
