Cuba Gradually Restores Power After Hurricane Rafael's Devastation

Cuban authorities began restoring power to the eastern half of the island on Thursday, a day after Hurricane Rafael caused a massive power outage, leaving 10 million people without electricity. The electrical grid collapsed on Wednesday as Rafael made its way across Cuba, packing winds of over 115 mph (185 km/h). The storm caused extensive damage, uprooting trees, toppling telephone poles, and damaging homes.

The hurricane eventually moved westward into the Gulf of Mexico, where it no longer posed an immediate threat to land, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Efforts to restore power in Cuba continue, as officials work to rebuild the infrastructure and assist those affected by the storm. The process of bringing the entire country’s grid back online is expected to take time.
