Cops Release Photos of Rioters After Vandalism at Kolkata Rape-Murder Protest

Kolkata Police have released images of the rioters responsible for the vandalism at RG Kar Memorial College and Hospital during a protest against the recent rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor. The police have shared these photographs on Facebook, marking the faces of the individuals involved and are seeking public assistance to identify them.

The violent incident occurred during a widespread 'reclaim the night' protest, where women across West Bengal and other cities rallied against the heinous crime. The mob attacked the hospital, damaging public property, vandalizing vehicles, and breaching the hospital building. The situation escalated to the point where police had to use teargas to regain control, resulting in injuries to several officers.

Despite rumors circulating that the rioters had compromised the crime scene, Kolkata Police have stated that the crime scene—a seminar hall on the fourth floor—remained untouched. They have urged social media users to avoid spreading misinformation.

The attack has sparked a political controversy. BJP's Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of orchestrating the violence by allegedly sending Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters to disrupt the protest. Adhikari claimed that these individuals, disguised as protesters, were allowed to cause destruction in the hospital to hinder the investigation. He also alleged that the police either facilitated their entry or neglected to intervene, thus obstructing the collection of crucial evidence for the CBI.

In response, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee condemned the vandalism, calling it "beyond acceptable limits." He has demanded that the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Vineet Goyal, ensure that all perpetrators are identified and held accountable within 24 hours. Banerjee emphasized the need for prioritizing the safety and security of medical professionals and supporting the justified demands of the protesting doctors.

The rape and murder case of the doctor is now under investigation by the CBI, following a Calcutta High Court order. The court's intervention came after concerns that the city police's investigation was stagnating and that critical evidence might be at risk of destruction without an independent, court-monitored probe.
