The UAE’s Commando Group triumphed at the Abu Dhabi World Amateur Jiu-Jitsu Championship, part of the prestigious 16th Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which took place on November 11, 2024. The competition saw athletes aged 30 and above competing in the blue and white belt divisions, and Commando Group carried forward its strong performance from the previous day to secure a remarkable victory.
In the standings, Brazil’s Checkmat International claimed second place, while the Kazakhstan National Academy rounded off the top three. This year’s amateur category saw an increase in participation, highlighting not only the growing popularity of jiu-jitsu but also the elevated level of technical skill on display. The competition underscored the positive impact of jiu-jitsu, benefiting athletes physically, mentally, and socially.

Several distinguished figures attended the championship, including Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation; Amal Abdul Qadir Al Afifi, Secretary-General of the Khalifa Award for Education; Rashed Saif Al Qubaisi, Group Chief Operating Officer of PureHealth; Yousef Abdullah Al Batran, Board Member of the UAEJJF; Rashid Humaid Al Qubaisi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Media; Dr. Suad Al Suwaidi, Deputy Secretary-General of the Khalifa Award for Education; Elena Sorlini, Acting CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports; Fahad Ali Al Shamsi, Secretary General of the UAEJJF; and Omar Ali Ahmed, Director of International Relations at ADNOC.
Amal Abdul Qadir Al Afifi expressed her admiration for the championship, stating that the event reflects Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its sports landscape. She noted that Abu Dhabi has become a prominent global sports hub, offering world-class experiences for athletes of all ages, while also fostering cultural exchange through such high-level events.
She also praised the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s efforts in creating an inclusive platform that enables athletes of all levels to compete and grow. The championship, she said, not only highlighted the Federation's success in promoting jiu-jitsu locally and internationally, but also showcased how the sport is increasingly embraced by a broad range of participants.
Mubarak Saleh Al-Menhali, Director of the Technical Department at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, emphasized the significance of the high turnout at the competition, highlighting the increasing popularity of jiu-jitsu within both local and global communities. Al-Menhali stressed that athletes in this division serve as role models, demonstrating how jiu-jitsu can help individuals face challenges, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and achieve personal growth.
Al-Menhali further noted that the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship proves that the sport transcends age and experience, uniting participants with a shared passion for jiu-jitsu. This aligns with the Federation’s broader mission to incorporate the sport into daily life, encourage personal growth, and promote self-improvement across all levels of practitioners.
The event concluded with a recognition ceremony where the winners were awarded, marking another successful chapter for the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which continues to inspire athletes worldwide while elevating the sport’s profile in the UAE and beyond.
