In a dramatic incident late Thursday night, two freight trains collided and derailed in Boulder, Colorado, resulting in extensive damage and the spillage of fuel. The crash occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. on tracks near Boulder Creek, north of Boulder Community Hospital. The collision caused both locomotives and several cargo cars to derail, leading to severe damage.
Video footage from the scene showed the two locomotives and numerous cargo cars off the rails, with heavy equipment on-site working to clear the wreckage. The collision also caused damage to a nearby rail bridge and impacted an electrical line, resulting in power outages affecting about a dozen customers.
According to the Boulder Police Department, the area surrounding the crash site was closed off for several hours to facilitate an investigation and cleanup operation. The roads in the vicinity have since reopened. The police department noted that the train involved in the incident was approximately a mile long, indicating that the cleanup and recovery efforts would be extensive.

Kendall Sloan, a spokesperson for BNSF Railway, confirmed that the cause of the collision is still under investigation. Sloan reported that a small amount of fuel spilled from the locomotive but assured that it did not affect Boulder Creek. The fuel was reportedly contained by sand that had spilled from one of the train cars.
The two crew members aboard the trains were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and have since been released. Sloan assured that there is no threat to the public and that crews are working diligently to resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible.
The Boulder Police Department initially reported concerns about fuel leaking into the creek but later clarified that the fuel had been absorbed by the sand. The investigation into the cause of the collision continues as authorities work to assess and address the damage caused by the derailment.
